Dryness: The Excess That Targets the Lung Specifically
This unit has covered wind, damp-heat, summer-heat, and cold. This lesson covers the sixth excess, and the one organ it's traditionally said to single out.
這個單元講過風、濕熱、暑,還有寒。這一課要講的是第六種外邪,跟它傳統上被說成特別挑上的那一個臟腑。
Unit 114: Dryness: The Excess That Targets the Lung Specifically
This unit's lessons on the six excesses have so far covered wind, damp-heat, summer-heat, and cold, most recently discussed through the modern lens of air conditioning sickness. Dryness, most closely associated with autumn's climate, completes the list, and is traditionally described as an excess with an unusually specific target: because the lung, as an earlier lesson in another unit explained, connects directly to the outside air and is easily affected by whatever that air is carrying, dryness is traditionally understood to injure the lung specifically, more directly than any of the other five excesses target any other single organ.
The traditional reasoning follows the lung's own described function: the lung depends on adequate moisture to keep its tissue supple and its passages clear, the way the earlier lesson on dispersing-and-descending described qi and fluids moving outward and downward through it. Dryness disrupts that moisture directly, traditionally producing a dry cough with little or no phlegm, a dry throat and nose, and dry skin — a cluster of symptoms all pointing toward moisture loss at the lung's own domain rather than a broader, whole-body complaint.
This gives dryness a narrower, more predictable reputation than an excess like wind, which this unit's earlier lesson described as capable of combining with almost any other excess and reaching almost any part of the body. Dryness is traditionally read as comparatively single-minded, which is also why traditional seasonal advice for autumn, covered in a later unit, leans so heavily on keeping the body and its immediate environment adequately moist — a direct, specific countermeasure aimed at a direct, specific threat.
