Air Conditioning Sickness
A modern complaint that fits an old category perfectly: what happens when cold air is chased with more cold air, on purpose.
一個完全符合古老分類的現代抱怨:當冷空氣被人刻意地拿更多冷空氣去對付時,會發生什麼事。
Unit 95: Air Conditioning Sickness
This unit's early lessons described cold as one of the six excesses, an external factor traditionally understood to enter the body and disrupt its normal warmth. Air conditioning sickness is a modern label for an old pattern applied to a distinctly modern setting: prolonged exposure to artificially cooled air, especially after the body has been overheated, is described using the same cold-excess framework used for any other cold exposure, rather than treated as a separate, unrelated modern ailment.
The traditional reasoning follows a specific sequence: a body that has just been sweating in the heat has its pores open, in a state traditionally described as more vulnerable to invasion precisely because the usual protective barrier is relaxed. Stepping directly into strongly air-conditioned air at that moment is traditionally read as inviting cold to enter through those open pores far more easily than it would through a body that had time to cool down gradually and close them again first.
This is one more instance of a broader principle repeated throughout this unit: the six excesses were never meant to describe only naturally occurring weather. A modern room cooled well past outdoor temperature is, from this framework's perspective, simply another source of the same cold excess a sudden winter chill would produce — which is why the traditional advice attached to this pattern is unusually simple and unusually modern-sounding at the same time: let the body cool down gradually and let the pores close before stepping into strong air conditioning, rather than moving from one extreme straight into the other.

This lesson explains a conceptual framework, not a diagnosis. Persistent symptoms after cold exposure should be evaluated by a licensed doctor.
