How Zang and Fu Organs Pair Up
Why heart trouble can show up as a burning sensation elsewhere — the logic behind zang-fu pairing.

Unit 19: How Zang and Fu Organs Pair Up
Each of the five zang organs is paired with one of the six fu organs — the liver with the gallbladder, the heart with the small intestine, the spleen with the stomach, the lung with the large intestine, and the kidney with the bladder (the triple burner is paired separately, with the heart's supporting structure). Chinese medicine calls this an "interior-exterior" relationship: the zang organ is the interior partner, doing the deeper, storing work, while the fu organ is the exterior partner, doing the more exposed, processing work.
The pairing means the two organs' problems often travel together. A common example: heat building up in the heart can travel to its paired organ, the small intestine, and show up as a burning sensation during urination — a symptom that, read on its own, seems to have nothing to do with the heart at all. Another example: a struggling spleen (digestion and transformation) commonly shows up alongside a struggling stomach (initial breakdown of food) — nausea and poor appetite appearing together, rather than as two coincidental complaints.
This pairing logic is one reason a Chinese medicine consultation can feel like it's asking about seemingly unrelated body systems at once. It isn't scattered questioning — it's checking both halves of a known partnership, because a problem rarely stays confined to just one side of it.

3. According to the passage, why does a Chinese medicine consultation sometimes ask about seemingly unrelated body systems?
This lesson explains a diagnostic logic, not a self-assessment tool. A symptom like burning urination should be evaluated promptly by a licensed doctor, not matched to this passage.
