Yin and Yang Consume Each Other: A Slow Trade-off, Not a Fixed Ratio
Yin and yang aren't a static split like 50/50. This lesson explains the classical principle that one is always quietly growing while the other quietly shrinks.
陰陽不是像 50/50 那樣固定不變的切分。這一課解釋一個經典原則:其中一方總是在悄悄增長,另一方就悄悄縮減。
Unit 83: Yin and Yang Consume Each Other: A Slow Trade-off, Not a Fixed Ratio
A lesson elsewhere in this unit described a single day's yin and yang as if they simply took turns, morning giving way to evening. But Chinese medicine describes the shift between them as more than a handoff at a fixed border — it's a continuous, gradual trade-off, named "waxing and waning," in which yin and yang are always quietly consuming each other, one slowly growing as the other slowly shrinks, rather than sitting at a static ratio until a switch flips.
This is different from the doubling-point principle covered in an earlier lesson, where an extreme of one produces a sudden flip into the other. Waxing and waning describes the ordinary, un-dramatic middle stretch: the slow build of yang through a spring morning, the slow build of yin through a autumn evening, each expanding at the direct expense of the other rather than growing independently. Neither side simply appears; it grows by consuming the space the other side gives up.
The distinction matters because it changes what "balance" means in this framework: not a fixed 50/50 split held constant, but a moving target where the ratio itself is expected to keep shifting, hour by hour and season by season, as long as neither side consumes the other completely or so quickly that it can't be replenished. Reading a snapshot of one moment as if it were the system's permanent state is the mistake this principle is designed to prevent.
