Supporting One Element to Rescue Another
An earlier lesson used the generating cycle to treat a weakness. This lesson uses the controlling cycle instead — restraining one element to relieve another.
稍早一課用相生循環來治療虛弱。這一課改用相剋循環——抑制一個元素,來緩解另一個元素的壓力。
Unit 106: Supporting One Element to Rescue Another
An earlier lesson in this unit described a treatment principle built on the generating cycle: strengthening an element's "mother" to rescue a weak "child." The controlling cycle, covered in one of this unit's first lessons, supports a parallel set of treatment principles, built on restraint rather than nourishment — restraining an element that has grown too strong in order to relieve the element it's been suppressing.
"Restrain wood to support earth" is the clearest example: when wood — associated with the liver — grows excessively strong, it's traditionally described as suppressing earth, associated with the spleen, past the controlling cycle's normal healthy limit, producing digestive symptoms that trace back to an overactive liver rather than a weak spleen on its own. The traditional response isn't only to strengthen the struggling spleen directly, but to restrain the overactive liver at the same time, relieving the pressure at its actual source.
"Nourish water to moisten wood" runs the same logic through a different pair: water, associated with the kidney, is traditionally understood to generate wood, associated with the liver, along the generating cycle — so a liver showing signs of dryness or excess heat can be treated by nourishing the kidney that feeds it, rather than only cooling the liver directly. Between this lesson and the earlier one on mother-child treatment, the two cycles this unit opened with turn out to double as two separate treatment toolkits, not just two diagrams describing how the five elements relate to each other in theory.
