The Five Emotions, Mapped to the Five Elements
This course's unit on external factors described seven emotions. This lesson shows the five-element version of the same idea, and how the two systems overlap without matching exactly.
這門課講外感因素的單元,描述過七情。這一課要看的是同一個概念的五行版本,以及這兩套系統如何重疊、卻又不完全對應。
Unit 105: The Five Emotions, Mapped to the Five Elements
A later unit in this course covers the seven emotions as one of the causes of disease. The five-element system has its own, older version of the same idea, called the "five emotions": anger assigned to wood and the liver, joy to fire and the heart, worry (or pensiveness) to earth and the spleen, grief to metal and the lung, and fear to water and the kidney — five emotions mapped onto five elements and their associated organs, rather than seven.
The two systems don't map onto each other perfectly, and that mismatch is worth noticing rather than smoothing over: the seven-emotions framework adds fright and worry-as-a-separate-category to the five-emotions list, splitting some categories the five-element system treats as one. This isn't a contradiction to be resolved so much as two overlapping tools built for slightly different purposes — the five-emotions version ties each feeling tightly to the five-element cycles this unit has spent several lessons explaining, making it easier to reason about how one emotion's excess might affect an entirely different organ through the generating or controlling cycle.
This is what gives the five-emotions framework its distinct practical use: because anger is tied to wood, and wood generates fire, sustained anger is traditionally read as eventually placing a burden on the heart as well as the liver, following the same generating-cycle logic covered in an earlier lesson on treating the mother to rescue the child. Reading emotion through the five-element map, rather than as seven separate items on a list, is what makes that kind of cross-organ prediction possible in the first place.
