What "Yangsheng" Actually Means
This whole series has used the word "yangsheng" loosely. This lesson finally defines it precisely, and separates it clearly from treating disease.
整個系列一直鬆散地使用「養生」這個詞。這一課終於把它精確定義,並且清楚地跟治病分開來。
Unit 97: What "Yangsheng" Actually Means
Every unit in this course so far has used the word "yangsheng," usually translated loosely as "wellness" or "nourishing life," without ever pausing to define it precisely against its more familiar counterpart: treating disease. The two aren't the same activity aimed at different severities of the same problem; they're traditionally described as separate goals entirely. Treating disease responds to a problem that has already appeared, aiming to correct it. Yangsheng operates before any problem appears, aiming to keep the conditions that produce disease from arising in the first place.
This distinction explains why this course's advice has consistently sounded so unremarkable — sleep on a regular schedule, eat with the season, avoid extremes of emotion, move the body regularly — rather than offering anything resembling a treatment protocol. Under the yangsheng framework, these ordinary habits aren't preliminary steps on the way to real medicine; they are the actual practice, evaluated by a completely different standard than a treatment would be. A treatment is judged by whether a specific problem resolves. Yangsheng is judged by whether problems keep failing to arise at all.
This is also the reason this entire series has repeated its closing reminder to see a licensed doctor at the end of nearly every lesson: yangsheng was never meant to substitute for treating disease once disease has actually appeared, and conflating the two is a traditionally recognized error in the framework itself, not just a caution added for a modern audience. Knowing which of the two goals a given piece of advice belongs to is what keeps "eat with the season" from ever being mistaken for a substitute for seeing a doctor about an actual symptom.
