Spring Diseases That Started in Winter
Not every illness shows up the same season it started. This lesson covers a classical idea about pathogens that wait.

Unit 96: Spring Diseases That Started in Winter
This unit's lessons on winter and spring described winter as a season for storing energy and spring as a season for encouraging its release. A classical principle connects the two seasons in a less obvious way: "if cold injures a person in winter, warm disease must follow in spring," describing a pathogen that enters the body during winter but doesn't produce symptoms right away, lying dormant instead and surfacing only once spring's warmth arrives — a pattern traditionally called "hidden pathogen."
The explanation given for the delay rests on winter's own storing character, covered in an earlier lesson: a body correctly following winter's pattern is holding its resources inward rather than actively fighting off every minor intrusion the way it might in a more outwardly active season. A cold pathogen that slips in during this storing period can, under this framework, simply be stored along with everything else, undetected, until spring's warming climate and the body's own shift toward outward release give it the conditions it needs to become active.
The idea is a specific, concrete case of a broader habit this course has pointed out repeatedly: reading a symptom in isolation from when it appears, without asking what happened in the preceding season, misses part of the picture this framework considers necessary. A spring illness that seems to come from nowhere is, under the hidden-pathogen principle, invited to be read partly as a delayed consequence of what happened, or didn't happen, months earlier — not a mystery that started the day the symptom did.
