Restoring Qi Without Medicine
The basic principle for restoring qi has nothing to do with herbs — the hard part is following through.
補氣的大原則其實很簡單,而且不需要吃藥——難的是做到。
Unit 4: Restoring Qi Without Medicine
If overexertion drains qi, then restoring it should, in theory, be simple: spend less, and replenish more. Chinese medicine turns this into four practical habits. Reduce the mental load of constant worry and responsibility. Go to sleep earlier, ideally before eleven at night, when the body's yang qi is naturally being nourished. Eat and drink with some restraint, rather than relying on cold or raw food. And avoid sweating to excess, since heavy sweating draws directly on qi.
These four habits are not four unrelated tips picked at random. Each one addresses a different one of the five functions from earlier in this course. Reducing mental load cuts down on what qi has to move. Sleeping earlier increases how much qi gets replenished overnight. Eating with restraint keeps the transforming function from being overworked. Avoiding excessive sweating protects the holding function from being forced to work overtime.
In other words, the four habits are the same five-function framework, simply read in reverse: instead of asking what happens when qi runs low, they ask what protects it from running low in the first place. None of them require a prescription. All of them require follow-through, which is precisely why they are harder than they sound.
