The Many Kinds of Qi
"Qi" isn't one substance with one name — Chinese medicine tracks several distinct kinds, each doing a different part of the job.
「氣」不是一種只有一個名字的東西——中醫追蹤好幾種不同的氣,各自負責這份工作的不同部分。
Unit 54: The Many Kinds of Qi
The first unit of this course described qi as a single pattern of function, but Chinese medicine actually divides it into several named varieties, each tied to a different source and a different job. Source qi, sometimes called original qi, is inherited at birth and stored in the kidney — the closest thing this system has to a starting budget, spent down gradually over a lifetime rather than replenished from scratch. Gathering qi, sometimes called pectoral qi, collects in the chest from what's breathed in and eaten, and powers the heartbeat and the breath directly.
Nutritive qi circulates within the blood vessels, closely tied to blood itself, and is responsible for nourishing the body's tissues as it travels. Defensive qi, by contrast, moves outside the vessels, closer to the body's surface, and is responsible for the "defense" function described in this course's earlier lesson on qi's five jobs — guarding against the six excesses covered later in this course. These four varieties aren't in competition with each other; they're better understood as one workforce with four different job assignments, all drawing on the same underlying resource.
Learning these names isn't about memorizing a list for its own sake. It matters because a doctor doesn't just ask "is this person's qi weak" — they ask which kind is weak, since a weak defensive qi (frequent colds) calls for a different response than a weak source qi (a lifelong constitutional frailty). The single word "qi" from the first lesson of this course was always shorthand for this more specific, four-part system underneath it.

Quick Check · 小測驗
1. According to the passage, where is source qi (original qi) stored?
2. According to the passage, which kind of qi is responsible for the "defense" function described earlier in the course?
3. According to the last paragraph, why does a doctor ask "which kind of qi is weak" rather than just "is qi weak"?
This lesson explains a classification of qi, not a diagnosis. Assessing which kind of qi might be weak is a judgment for a licensed doctor of Chinese medicine.
這是氣的分類說明,不是診斷;判斷哪一種氣可能虛弱,是合格中醫師的判斷。
