Qi Is Not "Energy"
The single biggest translation mistake in Chinese medicine — and why it matters.

Unit 1: Qi Is Not "Energy"
When people first encounter Chinese medicine, they almost always meet the word qi in translation as "energy." This translation feels natural, but it causes more confusion than it solves. Energy, in the scientific sense, is something you can measure, store, and convert from one form into another. Qi is not that kind of thing. It is not a substance sitting somewhere, waiting to be used — it is closer to the body doing its work. When someone's qi is described as weak, the point is not that a battery has run low. The point is that the body's basic functions are not being carried out with full force.
This is one reason many teachers of Chinese medicine now leave the word qi untranslated, the same way English speakers keep words like karma and nirvana rather than force them into an English equivalent. Once qi becomes "energy," the next question is almost always the same: can this be measured with a machine? That question has already gone wrong, because it assumes qi is a quantity in the first place. Asking how much qi someone has is a bit like asking how much fitness a person has. Fitness is real — you can see its effects in how someone moves, breathes, and recovers from illness — but it is not a substance sitting inside the body, waiting to be weighed.
So the very first lesson in Chinese medicine has nothing to do with herbs or acupuncture. It is simply this: qi describes a pattern of function, not a form of energy. Get this distinction right, and every idea that follows — from the five functions of qi to the causes of fatigue — will rest on solid ground.
