The Five Jobs of Qi
Why weak qi makes a person tired, cold, and prone to catching colds — traced back to one principle, not a list to memorize.
氣虛的人為什麼會累、會冷、常常感冒?從一個原理往下推,不用背清單。
Unit 2: The Five Jobs of Qi
Chinese medicine describes qi as doing five jobs in the body. It moves things along — pushing blood through the vessels, fluids through their channels, and the organs through their daily work. It keeps the body warm, which is why healthy hands and feet stay comfortably warm rather than cold. It defends the body against outside threats, which is why some people catch a cold at the first change of season while others seem to shrug it off. It holds things in their place, keeping blood inside the vessels and sweat from leaking out for no reason. And it transforms what a person eats and drinks into something the body can actually use.
These five jobs are not five separate topics to memorize. They are five expressions of the same underlying activity. Once you understand them as one thing seen from five angles, the symptoms of weak qi stop looking like a random list and start looking like a single pattern, read backward. If qi cannot move things along, a person feels tired and doesn't want to talk. If it cannot keep the body warm, the hands and feet turn cold. If it cannot defend the body, colds become frequent. If it cannot hold things in place, a person may sweat without any exertion at all. If it cannot transform food into something usable, appetite drops even though the person is eating normally.
This is the real difference between understanding a principle and memorizing a checklist. A checklist of five symptoms is easy to forget. A principle that explains why those five symptoms show up together — and predicts a sixth one you haven't seen yet — is much harder to lose.

1. According to the passage, what happens when qi cannot "hold things in place"?
2. Why does the passage compare the five jobs of qi to "one thing seen from five angles" rather than five separate topics?
3. What is the "real difference" the passage describes between understanding a principle and memorizing a checklist?
This lesson explains an idea, not a treatment. A symptom like "frequent colds" can have many causes — a doctor of Chinese medicine, not this reading, should judge which one applies to you.
