Chips and Semiconductors · Unit 2 · Lesson 5 ·
News about chips is full of nanometers and angstroms. Zoom in 3D from your fingernail to a hair, a blood cell, a virus, the lines on a chip, and at last single silicon atoms. Then find out how many nanometers your nails have grown since you opened this page.
A nanometer is one billionth of a meter, and an angstrom is one tenth of a nanometer, about the size of a single atom. The lines on today's chips are tens of nanometers apart. Names like “3 nanometer” and “2 nanometer” are names for generations of chips, not lengths that anyone measured.

Drag the Zoom slider, press × 10, or pick one of the eight stops. The yellow bracket at the bottom is a ruler: its length is written beside it, and it changes as you zoom. Watch the units change from centimeters to millimeters, micrometers, nanometers, and finally angstroms. You can also drag the picture to turn it.

Every object is drawn at its true size compared with the others, so this model is to scale. The shapes are simplified, and the objects are simply stacked on one another so that you can compare them: a virus does not really sit on a bacterium, and chips are not made on DNA. The fingernail's width (about 1 centimeter) is a round number. Real atoms are not hard balls.
Model drawn by My Culture Connect as a teaching diagram. The sizes come from the sources listed at the bottom of this page; the chip line spacing is the IRDS 2021 figure quoted in Wikipedia, “3 nm process”.
Reading ·
Turn on the news in Taiwan and you will hear about 3-nanometer chips, 2-nanometer chips, and now chips measured in angstroms. These words sound very small, and they are. But how small? Smaller than a hair? Smaller than a germ? Let us take a trip down to the bottom, ten times smaller at each step.
Start with your fingernail, about one centimeter wide. Zoom in about a hundred times and you reach a single hair, about 75 micrometers thick. A micrometer is one thousandth of a millimeter. Zoom in ten times more and you meet a red blood cell, about 7 micrometers across. A bacterium is smaller still, about 2 micrometers long.
Keep going, and micrometers become too big. We need a smaller unit: the nanometer, one thousandth of a micrometer, or one billionth of a meter. A flu virus is about 100 nanometers across. The finest lines on a modern chip are a few tens of nanometers apart. A strand of DNA is only about 2 nanometers wide.
At the very bottom are atoms. Silicon atoms in a chip sit about 0.24 nanometers from their neighbors. For sizes like this, scientists use an even smaller unit, the angstrom, which is one tenth of a nanometer. It is named after Anders Ångström, a Swedish scientist. So one silicon atom is a little more than 2 angstroms wide.
Now for a surprise. A “3-nanometer chip” does not have parts that are 3 nanometers wide. Long ago, the number in the name was a real length on the chip. Today it is only a name for a generation of chips: a smaller number means a newer design that packs in more transistors. In a “3-nanometer” chip, the closest metal lines are expected to be about 24 nanometers apart.
Names with angstroms work the same way. One chip maker uses names like 18A, and another uses A16, where the A stands for angstrom. They tell you which generation a chip belongs to, not what a ruler would read. Still, the real sizes are amazing. Chip makers now build parts only a few dozen atoms wide, billions of times on every chip.

nano · 奈
The prefix nano comes from the Greek word nanos, which means dwarf. In 1960 it was officially approved as the prefix for one billionth. In Taiwan it is written 奈米; you may also see 納米 in other places.
1868 · Ångström
In 1868 the Swedish physicist Anders Ångström made a chart of the colors in sunlight. He wrote the wavelengths in units of one ten-millionth of a millimeter. That unit was later named the angstrom after him. It is not an official SI unit, but scientists still use it for atoms.
IRDS 2021
An international roadmap for the chip industry says that a “3-nanometer” chip is expected to have gates 48 nanometers apart and metal lines 24 nanometers apart. Nothing in it is 3 nanometers. The number is a label that tells you the generation.
18A · A16
In 2021 Intel began naming its newest generations with the letter A for angstrom, such as 20A and 18A. In 2024 TSMC announced a generation called A16, planned for production in 2026. Like the nanometer names, these are names of generations.
