A14 · Mind and Self
Can You Know What Another Mind Feels?
You have never felt any pain but your own. Mill’s analogy, Nagel’s bat, a scientist raised without color, and two friends on a bridge arguing about whether the fish are happy.
Everything we know about other minds comes through bodies, faces, and words. The question is whether that evidence can ever reach what it is evidence for, and the answer now decides how we treat animals, patients, and machines.

Can You Know What Another Mind Feels?
01The pain you have never felt
A friend catches her hand in a door. You see her face tighten, you hear the cry, and you wince. You are entirely sure that she is in pain. Yet you did not feel it. You have never felt anyone’s pain but your own, and you never will. What reached you was a sound and a movement, and from these you arrived at once, without any sense of reasoning, at a fact about an experience that is closed to you. Philosophers call the puzzle this raises the problem of other minds. It has two parts. The first asks how you know that other people have an inner life at all. The second assumes that they do and asks whether you can know what it is like.
02Reasoning from my own case
The classic answer to the first question was given by John Stuart Mill in 1865. I know in my own case, he said, that a burn is followed by pain and that the pain is followed by a cry. I observe that other people have bodies like mine, and that when they are burned they cry out as I do. I conclude that the middle link is present in them as well. This is the argument from analogy, and it describes fairly well what we would say if asked to defend our belief.
Its weakness is that it is an induction from a single case. The lesson on induction showed how little we may infer from one observation. If I had opened one box and found a beetle in it, I would have poor grounds for claiming that every box in the world contains a beetle. And here the conclusion can never be checked, since I cannot open a second box. There is a further oddity. Nobody acquires the belief in this way. An infant responds to its mother’s smile long before it could notice any correlation between its own feelings and its own face, which it has never seen.
03Hats, coats, and machines
Descartes saw the gap clearly. Looking down from a window at people passing in the street, he remarks in the Meditations, what he strictly sees is hats and coats, which could conceal automata. He judges that they are men. In the Discourse on Method he asked how one could tell a perfect mechanical imitation of a human being from the real thing, and proposed “two most certain tests.” A machine could never arrange words “so as appositely to reply to what is said in its presence,” and it could never act sensibly across “all the occurrences of life,” because each of its skills would need its own special mechanism. Animals, he concluded, fail both tests and are machines without thought.
The passage is worth rereading today. Descartes was confident that no machine would ever pass his first test, and for more than three centuries he was right.
04What is it like to be a bat?
Suppose the first question is settled and other creatures do have experience. In 1974 the American philosopher Thomas Nagel asked how far our knowledge of it can go. He chose bats because they are mammals, close enough to us that few doubt they feel something, and because they perceive the world chiefly by echolocation, a sense we lack. A bat sends out high-pitched cries and builds its picture of the space around it from the echoes. We can describe this process in complete physical detail. What we cannot do, Nagel argued, is know what it is like for the bat. If I imagine hanging upside down and hearing my way through the dark, I learn what it would be like for me to behave as a bat does. The bat’s own experience has a point of view built into it, and an objective description, which is written from no point of view in particular, leaves exactly that out.
05The scientist who had never seen red
Eight years later the Australian philosopher Frank Jackson made the point with a human being. Mary is a brilliant scientist who has lived all her life in a black-and-white room and learned about the world from black-and-white screens. Her field is color vision, and she has come to know every physical fact about it: the wavelengths, the cells of the retina, the pathways in the brain, the way people use the word “red.” One day the door is opened and she sees a ripe tomato. Does she learn anything? Most people answer that she does. She learns what it is like to see red. But she already knew all the physical facts. Jackson concluded that there are facts about experience that physics cannot state, and the argument has been disputed at every step ever since. You can try it below.
06The beetle in the box
Wittgenstein thought the whole problem rested on a wrong picture. Imagine, he says, that everyone has a box with something in it that we call a “beetle.” No one can look into anyone else’s box, and each says that he knows what a beetle is only from his own. In that situation the thing in the box would play no part in the meaning of the word. The boxes could hold different things, or nothing. His point is that words such as “pain” cannot get their meaning from a private inner object that each speaker points to alone. We learn them in public, from people who comfort us when we fall. And in ordinary life we do not infer that someone is in pain. We see it in the face, as directly as we see that the face is pale. On this view the skeptic’s picture of minds sealed inside bodies is itself the mistake.
07The happiness of fish
The oldest statement of the problem is a conversation of about sixty words. Zhuangzi and his friend Huizi, a logician, were strolling on the bridge over the Hao River. Zhuangzi remarked that the minnows were swimming about freely, and that this was the happiness of fish. Huizi said: “You are not a fish. How do you know the happiness of fish?” Zhuangzi replied: “You are not I. How do you know that I do not know it?” Huizi pressed his advantage. “I am not you, so I do not know what you know. You are not a fish, so you do not know the happiness of fish. The case is complete.” Zhuangzi’s answer has been argued over for two thousand years. “Let us go back to the beginning. When you asked how I know, you already knew that I knew. I know it from up here on the Hao.”
Huizi argues as Nagel’s reader might: knowledge of an experience requires being the one who has it. Zhuangzi first shows that the principle defeats itself, since Huizi relies on knowing something about Zhuangzi’s mind in order to state it. His last line turns on the Chinese word ān, which means both “how” and “from where.” He answers the second sense. He knows it from where he stands, on a bridge, on a fine day, watching them. The suggestion is that knowledge of another creature is had from within a shared situation, by a being that is itself alive and at ease, and that no proof conducted from outside is needed or possible. Mencius, his contemporary, made a similar observation about human beings. Anyone who suddenly sees a child about to fall into a well feels alarm and compassion, and feels it before any thought of reward. For Mencius that response is the root of all morality.
08Three places where the answer is needed
The problem has left the seminar room. In 2012 a group of neuroscientists meeting at Cambridge signed a declaration that mammals, birds, and other creatures, octopuses among them, have the neural equipment for conscious states, and laws on animal welfare have begun to follow. In hospitals, some patients who show no response at all have been found, when placed in a scanner and asked to imagine playing tennis, to produce the same brain activity as healthy volunteers. And there are now machines that pass the first of Descartes’s tests with ease. They reply appositely to whatever is said to them, and when asked they will describe their feelings. Whether there is anything it is like to be such a system is a question on which serious researchers disagree, and no agreed method exists for settling it. In each of the three cases behavior has come apart from the usual signs, and we find that we have been relying on resemblance to ourselves without ever deciding which resemblances count.
Thought experiment ·
Try it: Mary’s room, then the ladder of minds
Two experiments. In the first you learn everything science can say about red, and then see it. In the second you say how sure you are that each of nine things has an inner life, and find out what rule you were using.
Part 1 · Mary’s room
You are Mary. You have never seen any color. Read the four files on your screen. Together they stand for everything physical there is to know about red.
This is red.
Did Mary learn anything new just now?
This was Jackson’s conclusion. If she learned a fact, and she already knew every physical fact, then some facts are not physical, and the view that everything is physical is false. The price is high: these extra facts seem to do no causal work, since physics already explains every movement of Mary’s body, including her saying “So that is red!” Jackson himself later gave the argument up for this reason.
On this reply Mary gains know-how: she can now recognize red, imagine it, and remember it. Learning to ride a bicycle also gives you something no textbook could, and nobody concludes that there are non-physical facts about cycling. Critics answer that the abilities seem to rest on something she now knows, and that she could lose the abilities and still know it.
This is the most popular reply among physicalists today. Someone who knows that water fills the lake may not know that H₂O does, though it is the same fact. Mary knew the fact about red under a scientific description. She now knows it under a concept that can only be acquired by having the experience. The difficulty is to explain why a mere new way of thinking should feel like such a discovery.
Dennett held that we misjudge the case because we cannot imagine knowing all the physical facts. We picture someone who has read a great deal. A Mary who truly knew everything would know exactly how her brain was about to react, and if you tried to fool her with a blue banana she would catch the trick at once. Most people find this hard to believe, and Dennett’s answer is that the difficulty of believing it is not evidence.
Part 2 · The ladder of minds
Now the other question. For each of these, how sure are you that there is something it is like to be it? Move every slider, then press the button.
What four philosophers would say
You are none of these things. On what grounds do you claim to know about any of them? Put every slider in the middle.
You moved the sliders without difficulty, so you knew something. You knew it from where you stand, as a living thing among living things.
Ask two things. Can it reply appositely to whatever is said? Can it act sensibly in every circumstance? What fails is a machine. (He put the dog, the bat, and the octopus at zero.)
The bat almost certainly has experience. What you cannot know is what that experience is like, and no amount of further fact about its brain will tell you.

In his own words
The exchange closes one of the Outer Chapters, which were written by followers of Zhuangzi in the century or two after his death. The Chinese is given under each passage.
Zhuangzi, chapter 17, “Autumn Floods” 《莊子・秋水》 · translated for this series from the Chinese text
Zhuangzi and Huizi were strolling on the bridge over the Hao. Zhuangzi said, “The minnows swim out and about so freely. This is the happiness of fish.” Huizi said, “You are not a fish. How do you know the happiness of fish?” Zhuangzi said, “You are not I. How do you know that I do not know the happiness of fish?” Huizi said, “I am not you, so I certainly do not know you. You are certainly not a fish, so your not knowing the happiness of fish is complete.”
Huizi’s reply is a neat piece of reasoning. He accepts Zhuangzi’s premise, that one being cannot know another’s mind, and shows that it yields his own conclusion. The word quán, “complete,” is a logician’s term: the proof is finished. Notice, though, what he has conceded on the way. To argue at all he had to understand what Zhuangzi meant, and he never doubts that Zhuangzi is in some state of mind about the fish.
Zhuangzi said, “Let us go back to the root of this. When you said, ‘How do you know the happiness of fish?’ you asked me because you already knew that I knew it. I know it from above the Hao.”
Readers have always divided over this ending. Some hold that Zhuangzi loses the argument and escapes with a pun on ān, which can mean “how” or “where.” Others hold that the pun is the point. Huizi asked for a proof, as though knowledge of another creature had to be reached by inference from outside. Zhuangzi names a place. His knowing happened there, in the company of the fish and of his friend, and it was already under way before the question of proof was raised. The passage gives no theory. It leaves two ways of standing on a bridge.

Objections and replies
This is not a real problem. Nobody doubts that other people have minds, and a doubt that no one can feel is not worth discussing.
The question was never whether we believe it. It is what entitles us to, and the answer is needed wherever the belief runs out. We are certain about our friends and quite uncertain about fish, insects, the unresponsive patient, and the machine. A person who cannot say what grounds the easy cases has nothing to go on in the hard ones.
Neuroscience will settle it. Once we know which brain processes go with consciousness, we can simply check whether a creature has them.
The method depends on the thing in question. We find out which brain processes go with experience by asking human subjects what they experience and trusting their reports. That gives us the signs of consciousness in creatures like us. Applying them to an octopus, whose nervous system is arranged on a different plan, or to a machine with no neurons, is once more an argument from analogy, and the question of how far the analogy holds is the original problem.
If something behaves in every respect as though it had feelings, there is nothing further to ask. To have a mind is to behave in those ways.
This is behaviorism, and its attraction is that it makes other minds knowable. The standard reply is that it gets one’s own case wrong. When I am in pain, I am aware of more than a tendency to groan, and a trained actor can produce the behavior without the pain while a paralyzed patient has the pain without the behavior. The view survives in a subtler form, functionalism, which identifies a mental state with its whole causal role inside a system. Whether the right organization is enough, whatever it is made of, is the question now being asked about machines.

A view from the Dharma
The Buddha uses the argument from analogy, and he uses it for a different purpose. “All tremble at the rod, all fear death,” says the Dhammapada. “Treating others like oneself, neither kill nor incite to kill.” The Pali is attānaṃ upamaṃ katvā, literally “having made oneself the comparison.” In another discourse he teaches householders to reason in this way: I want to live and do not want to die, and others are the same; “the thing that is disliked by me is also disliked by others.” Mill offered the analogy as a proof that other minds exist, and as a proof it is weak. The Buddha offers it as a practice. He takes the existence of other beings’ suffering for granted and asks his hearers to keep turning their attention to it until it weighs with them as their own does. The later tradition calls the result the equality of self and other.
Buddhist philosophers also met the skeptical problem head-on. The Yogācāra school held that what we experience is only mind, and its opponents replied that it must then deny that other minds exist. In the seventh century Dharmakīrti answered in a short treatise, the Proof of Other Mindstreams, and his proof is Mill’s: I observe that my own speech and action are preceded by intention, and I infer the same of speech and action that are not mine. Four centuries later Ratnakīrti argued that, on Yogācāra principles, the inference fails. The tradition also claims that the gap can be crossed directly. The early texts list knowledge of others’ minds among the powers that come with deep concentration, and compare it to seeing one’s face in a clean mirror. Whatever one makes of that claim, it shows that Buddhism never treated another mind as sealed in principle (Dharma and the West, D11 and D19).
