How Do You Read Music?

Tap a line or a space on a five-line staff and hear the note, see its name, and see the same note light up on a keyboard. Then find out why a clef changes everything.

Sound stays off until you press the button, and it starts quiet. If you hear nothing on an iPhone, check the silent switch.

Big idea ·

On a staff, higher on the page means higher in pitch. A clef at the start says which note a line is, and the rest follow in alphabetical order, up the lines and spaces.

A Staff You Can Tap

Tap or click any line or space, even above and below the five lines. A note appears there, you hear it, and you see its name, its solfège name, and its frequency. The keys below show the same note on a keyboard. Switch the clef, and watch what happens to the same note.

Tap a line or a space. ·

Unit 5: How Do You Read Music?

Writing needs letters, and music needs a way to write too. A composer who writes a tune on paper must tell a player which notes to play, and how high or low each one is. Over many centuries, people found a simple idea: put the notes on a ladder. The higher a note sits on the page, the higher its pitch.

That ladder is the staff. It is made of five horizontal lines with four spaces between them. A note can sit on a line, or in a space. We count the lines from the bottom: the first line is the lowest. In British English the staff is usually called a stave.

But which note is which line? That is the job of the clef, the symbol at the beginning. The treble clef is also called the G clef. Its curl goes around the second line, and tells you that this line is G4, the G above middle C. The bass clef is also called the F clef. Its two dots sit above and below the fourth line, and tell you that this line is F3. These shapes began as the letters G and F, and became stylized over time.

Once you know one line, you know them all. Notes go up in alphabetical order, through the letters A to G, and then start again. On the treble clef the lines, from the bottom, are E, G, B, D, F, and the spaces are F, A, C, E. Many students remember them as “Every Good Boy Does Fine” and “FACE.” On the bass clef the lines are G, B, D, F, A, and the spaces are A, C, E, G. If a note is above or below the staff, we add a short extra line, called a ledger line.

很多學生用「Every Good Boy Does Fine」和「FACE」來記。低音譜號的線是 G、B、D、F、A,間是 A、C、E、G。

Middle C shows how clefs work together. It sits one ledger line below the treble staff, and also one ledger line above the bass staff. It is the same note, the same C4, written in two places. In Taiwan, many schools sing notes with the names Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si. The English letter names C, D, E, F, G, A, B go with them. A letter name is repeated in every octave, because notes an octave apart share a name.

在台灣,很多學校用 Do、Re、Mi、Fa、Sol、La、Si 唱音,英文字母音名 C、D、E、F、G、A、B 和它們對應。

The names Do, Re, Mi came from a hymn. In the eleventh century in Italy, a music teacher named Guido of Arezzo named the notes of a six-note pattern after the first syllables of the lines of a Latin hymn, “Ut queant laxis.” Later, “Ut” was replaced by the easier “Do.” Some systems keep Do fixed on C, which is called fixed do. Others move Do to the first note of any key, which is called movable do. Taiwan’s school music also uses numbers, 1 to 7, in a notation called jianpu. It writes the same notes as the staff, and both appear in the curriculum.

Questions ·

Why do we need a clef at the beginning of a staff?

The five lines and four spaces are only positions. A clef names the note on one line, and then all the other lines and spaces follow from it.

A note sits on the first line of a treble staff. Which note is it? What about the first line of a bass staff?

On the treble staff the first line is E4. On the bass staff the first line is G2. The same position means different notes in different clefs.

Is middle C in the treble clef a different note from middle C in the bass clef?

No. It is the same note, C4, 261.63 Hz. In the treble clef it is written on a ledger line below the staff, and in the bass clef on a ledger line above it.

A Hymn ·

Where Do, Re, Mi came fromDo、Re、Mi

In eleventh-century Italy, the music theorist Guido of Arezzo named the six notes of a pattern after the first syllable of each line of a Latin hymn to St. John: ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la. Each line of the hymn begins one step higher than the last, so singers could remember each note by its line. Later “ut” was changed to the easier “do.” Sources disagree about who changed it and when, so we only say that it happened.

A Ladder ·

A staff that grew from four lines to five

The modern use of staff lines is attributed to Guido of Arezzo, whose four-line staff is still used in chant books today. Five-line staves appeared in Italy in the 13th century. Staves with four, five, and six lines were all used as late as about 1600. The five-line staff we know became the standard only after that.

Two Letters ·

Clefs are letters in disguise

At first, a staff had a letter written at its beginning to show which line it named. Over time the shapes of these letters became stylized. The treble clef comes from G, and its curl circles the G line. The bass clef comes from F, and its two dots sit around the F line. There is also a third kind, the C clef, used for the viola and some other instruments.

A Row of Numbers ·

Jianpu, the numbered notation

Instead of a staff, numbered notation writes the notes of a scale as the numbers 1 to 7, which stand for Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si. A dot above a number means an octave higher, and a dot below means an octave lower. Rousseau presented a similar idea to the French Academy of Sciences in 1742, and the Galin–Paris–Chevé system developed it. It came to China by way of Japan around the turn of the twentieth century.

Myth vs. Fact ·

Four things people get wrong

A position on the staff always has the same note name.

The clef decides. The first line is E4 in the treble clef, and G2 in the bass clef. Without a clef, a staff is only a set of positions.

Middle C is a different note in the treble and bass clefs.

It is the same note, C4. It sits on a ledger line below the treble staff, and on a ledger line above the bass staff.

Do always means the note C.Do 永遠就是 C 這個音。

✓ Fact · 事實Only in fixed do. In movable do, Do is the first note of whatever key the music is in. The curriculum names “solfège” but does not choose between them.

Do, Re, Mi were made up to teach children.

They come from the first syllables of the lines of a Latin hymn, and they were in use in the eleventh century in Italy. Teachers have used them to teach singing for about a thousand years.
