Share candies equally among friends, or pack them into bags of the same size. Two different questions, one division sign. Watch what is left over, and see why it is always smaller than the number you divide by.
Division answers two different questions. Sharing equally asks how many each group gets when you know how many groups there are. Making groups asks how many groups you can make when you know how big each group is. Both are written the same way, and anything left over, the remainder, is always less than the divisor.

Choose Share equally or Make groups, set how many candies there are and how many people or how many in each bag, and press Deal. When sharing, the candies are dealt around one at a time, like cards. When making groups, one bag is filled before the next one opens. Whatever cannot be dealt stays on the table, and that is the remainder. When the dealing is done, press Line up in rows to turn the plates or bags into the rows of an array.

A teaching model. Every candy is drawn, from 1 to 30, and the candies on the plates or in the bags plus the ones on the table always add up to the total. The dealing is slowed down so that you can watch it. Real sharing does not have to go one at a time; the model does it that way so that every step is fair and easy to follow.

Reading ·
Here are two questions about the same twelve candies. First: you share the twelve candies equally among three friends. How many does each friend get? Second: you pack the twelve candies into bags, with three candies in each bag. How many bags do you fill? Both questions use the numbers 12 and 3, and both answers are 4. But they are not the same question, and if you act them out, your hands do very different things.
To answer the first question, you deal the candies out, one to each friend, around and around, like cards. You already know how many groups there are: three friends. You are finding out how big each group gets. American teachers often call this fair sharing. Taiwan's curriculum calls it pingfen, sharing equally. Dealing one at a time is a simple way to make sure that nobody gets more than anyone else.
To answer the second question, you fill one bag with three candies, then a second bag, then a third, until you run out. This time you know how big each group is: three candies. You are finding out how many groups you can make. Even so, both questions are written the same way: 12 ÷ 3 = 4, read “twelve divided by three equals four.” The number being divided, 12, is the dividend. The number you divide by, 3, is the divisor. The answer, 4, is the quotient.
Now try thirteen candies. Deal them to three friends, and each gets four, but one candy is left on the table. There is not enough for another round. The leftover is called the remainder. An American classroom writes 13 ÷ 3 = 4 R 1, where R stands for remainder. In Chinese you say the quotient is 4 and the remainder is 1. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor. If three candies were left, there would be enough for one more round.
Division and multiplication are partners. When the dealing is done, line up each plate's candies in a row. Three plates of four make three rows of four, which is the tray from the last lesson: 3 × 4 = 12. So 12 ÷ 3 = 4, because 3 × 4 = 12. This is also how to check an answer. Multiply the divisor by the quotient, add the remainder, and you should get back the number you started with: 3 × 4 + 1 = 13.
One number needs special care: zero. If you have no candies, everyone gets zero, so 0 ÷ 3 = 0. But you cannot divide by zero. Try sharing twelve candies among zero people, or packing them into bags that hold zero candies each. You could keep filling empty bags forever and never use up a single candy. Mathematicians say that dividing by zero is undefined: it has no answer at all.

The colors repeat because the remainders repeat: dividing by 4 leaves 1, 2, 3, 0, then 1, 2, 3, 0 again. A remainder can never reach the divisor. Encyclopaedia Britannica states the same rule for whole numbers: a = qb + r, “with r less than b.”
Stories Behind the Division Sign ·

The Sign · 除號
The sign ÷ was first used for division by the mathematician Johann Rahn, in his book Teutsche Algebra in 1659. The mark itself was older. According to Jeff Miller's history of mathematical symbols, it “was used by many writers before Rahn as a minus sign.” Rahn's book was translated into English in 1668, and the new division sign came along with it.
The Colon · 冒號
Not everyone adopted ÷. In 1684 the mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz used a colon, “:”, for both ratio and division. You may remember from Lesson 2 that Leibniz also disliked the × sign and used a dot instead. He liked his symbols small.
Long Division ·
In an American classroom, long division is written with the divisor outside a bracket and the quotient on top. OpenStax notes that “in the past you may have used the notation 4)12.” Nineteenth-century U.S. textbooks wrote the divisor, dividend, and quotient on one line, as 36)116(3. And the bracket itself? Jeff Miller's history says simply: “The symbol does not have a name.”
Two Long Words ·
Teachers have names for the two kinds of division. A teaching guide from the Utah State Board of Education calls them partitive (fair sharing) and quotative (measurement), and adds that students “are not expected to know or produce the terms.” Taiwan's curriculum calls them dengfen-chu and baohan-chu, but in Grade 2 it talks only about sharing and packing, without writing a division sign at all.
Myth vs. Fact ·

They ask different questions, but both are division and both are written the same way: 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
✗ Myth · 迷思Dividing always makes a number smaller.
Not always. 12 ÷ 1 = 12: sharing twelve candies with one person leaves that person with all twelve.
A remainder can be any size.
A remainder is always less than the divisor. If you had that many left, you could share one more round.
✗ Myth · 迷思Dividing by zero gives zero.
Zero divided by a number is zero, but a number divided by zero is undefined. No answer works.
Know the size? Find the groups. Both are division.

Acting out first is what Taiwan's Grade 2 item N-2-9 asks for: sharing and packing with hands-on activities, before any division sentence is written. The Utah guide adds that students should meet both kinds of problems without having to know their names. Include a story where the divisor is larger than the number of counters (3 counters among 4 people) and talk about why each person gets zero.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Students should find that the remainders repeat 0, 1, 2 for groups of 3, and never reach the divisor. Taiwan's curriculum suggests handling even division first and remainders after (N-3-4), so this activity fits after students are comfortable sharing without leftovers. The “What Will the Remainder Be?” strip above shows the same pattern up to 30.
