Why Can't You Just Add the Bottoms?

One half plus one third is not two fifths, and you can see why: two fifths is smaller than one half. Cut two strips into pieces of the same size, and the answer counts itself.

Big idea ·

The bottom number of a fraction names the size of the pieces, and the top number counts them. You can only count pieces together when they are the same size, so before adding, cut both fractions into equal pieces.

Fraction Strips on a Table

Strip A and Strip B are the same length, and each one is one whole. Use the buttons to change how many pieces each strip is cut into and how many are colored. First press Add tops and bottoms? to see the wrong answer laid out in red. Then press Cut into equal pieces: both strips are cut finer until their pieces match. Finally press Put them together, and the colored pieces fly onto the answer strip below.

A teaching model. Every strip is exactly the same length, so a strip cut into sixths really has six equal pieces of one sixth each. The denominators you can choose are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, so the finest cut is 60 pieces. The cutting is slowed down so that you can watch the old pieces split.

Unit 4: Why Can't You Just Add the Bottoms?

You eat one half of a pizza, and your friend eats one third of another pizza of the same size. How much pizza did you eat together? A quick answer is to add the tops and the bottoms: 1 + 1 = 2 and 2 + 3 = 5, so 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5. It looks neat, but it cannot be right. Two fifths is less than one half. You added food and somehow ended up with less than you started with. Something has gone wrong, and this lesson finds out what.

Start with what a fraction means. The bottom number, the denominator, tells how many equal parts the whole has been divided into. The top number, the numerator, tells how many of those parts you have. So 1/2 means one of two equal pieces, and 1/3 means one of three. In English you say the top number first, “one half,” “one third,” “three fourths.” In Chinese you say the bottom number first: er fen zhi yi, two parts, take one.

英文先唸上面的數:one half、one third、three fourths。

Here is the problem. The denominator is not a count of things; it is the name of the piece. A half and a third are different sizes, the way a quarter and a dime are different coins. One quarter and one dime are two coins, but they are not two quarters. In the same way, one half and one third are two pieces, but they are not two fifths. You can only count pieces together when they are the same size.

So make them the same size. Cut each half into three smaller pieces and each third into two. Now both strips are cut into sixths. One half is the same amount as three sixths, and one third is the same as two sixths. Fractions that have the same value are called equivalent fractions. Now the pieces match, and counting is easy: three sixths plus two sixths is five sixths. The smallest number of pieces that works for both, here six, is called the least common denominator.

There is a quick way to catch the mistake, even without cutting anything. When you add two amounts, the answer has to be bigger than each of them. One U.S. standard asks students to recognize that 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7 must be wrong, because 3/7 is less than 1/2. Adding the tops and the bottoms always gives an answer that lands between the two fractions, never above them. If your sum is smaller than one of its parts, go back and cut again.

When the pieces are already the same size, adding is simple. One fourth plus two fourths is three fourths: you just add the number of pieces, and the denominator stays the same, because the size of each piece does not change. Americans often call fourths “quarters,” so this also reads as one quarter plus two quarters equals three quarters. Sometimes the answer is more than a whole: three fourths plus one half is five fourths, which is one and one fourth. That is a mixed number, a whole number together with a fraction.

美國人常把 fourths 叫做 quarters,所以也可以說 one quarter plus two quarters equals three quarters。

Questions ·

Why is 2/5 not the answer to 1/2 + 1/3?

Because 2/5 is less than 1/2. When you add something, the answer must be bigger than each part, so 2/5 cannot be right.

What do the denominator and the numerator of a fraction tell you?

The denominator tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into. The numerator tells how many of those parts you have.

How do you add 1/2 + 1/3 correctly?

Cut both into sixths: 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6. Then add the pieces: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

Say It · 怎麼唸

How Do You Say It in English?

English reads the top number first; Chinese reads the bottom number first. Tap a speaker to hear each line both ways.

For 2, English says half, not “second.”
Other denominators use the ordinal: third, fourth, fifth, sixth…
Also “three quarters”: quarters are another way to say fourths.
5 is the numerator, 8 is the denominator. With more than one piece, add -s.5 是分子,8 是分母。
The tempting wrong answer to 1/2 + 1/3.1/2 + 1/3 那個看起來很像、其實是錯的答案。
Equivalent fractions: the same amount, cut differently.

For teachers: the English forms follow OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, sections 4.1 and 4.4 (“one and three-fifths”; “Quarters are another way to say fourths”). The Chinese forms follow the Ministry of Education's dictionaries and NAER's math terms (san fen zhi wu; san you wu fen zhi er).給老師:英文唸法依 OpenStax《Prealgebra 2e》4.1、4.4 節(one and three-fifths;Quarters are another way to say fourths);中文唸法依教育部辭典與國教院數學名詞(三分之五;三又五分之二)。

Game ·

See Why ·

Cut Them the Same 切成一樣大

Choose two fractions, then cut both strips into the same number of pieces. The thick marks are the old cuts. When every old cut lands on a new line, the pieces match and the fractions can be added.

Choose two fractions ·

Cut both into · 兩條都切成 1pieces · 塊

The numbers that work are the common multiples of the two denominators, and the smallest one is the least common denominator. Any of them gives the right answer; the smallest just keeps the pieces bigger.

Egypt · 埃及

Only one piece at a time一次只用一塊

The Rhind papyrus was written around 1650 BC by a scribe named Ahmes, who says he is copying a document 200 years older. According to the MacTutor history archive, Egyptian fractions were limited to unit fractions, fractions with 1 on top, with the exception of 2/3 and, less often, 3/4. To write two fifths, a scribe used a sum of unit fractions; the papyrus's table of doubles lists 1/3 + 1/15 for twice 1/5.

The Bar · 分數線

Where the line in the middle came from中間那條線從哪裡來

Jeff Miller's history of mathematical symbols says that the horizontal fraction bar “was introduced by the Arabs,” and that several sources credit al-Hassar around 1200. Fibonacci was the first European mathematician to use the bar the way we do today. The slanted slash came much later, partly because a horizontal bar was hard to print.

China · 中國

The Nine Chapters《

The first chapter of the Chinese classic The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art gives, in the words of the MacTutor archive, “rules for the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions,” along with a method for finding the greatest common divisor, which is what you need to reduce a fraction. Most historians think the text began around 200 BC, although others place it between 100 BC and AD 50.

A Coin ·

A U.S. quarter is a coin worth one fourth of a dollar. The OpenStax textbook uses it to explain adding fractions with the same denominator: one quarter plus two quarters equals three quarters, and “Quarters are another way to say fourths.”

Myth vs. Fact ·

Four things people get wrong

To add fractions, add the tops and add the bottoms.

That gives 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5, which is less than 1/2. First cut both into pieces of the same size, then add the pieces.

A bigger denominator means a bigger fraction.

A bigger denominator means the whole is cut into more pieces, so each piece is smaller. One eighth is less than one half.

2/4 is more than 1/2, because its numbers are bigger.2/4 比 1/2 大,因為它的數字比較大。

✓ Fact · 事實They are the same amount. Cutting each half into two smaller pieces doubles both numbers but does not change the size.

To find a common denominator, you always have to multiply the two denominators.

Any common multiple works. For fourths and sixths, twelfths are enough; 24ths also work, with smaller pieces. Taiwan's curriculum even discourages simply multiplying the denominators.

Reading, order of teaching, and methods in Taiwan and the United States

  • Reading order is reversed. English says the numerator first (“three fourths”); Chinese says the denominator first (the Ministry of Education's dictionary gives san fen zhi wu for 5/3). Mixed numbers: OpenStax reads 1 3/5 as “one and three-fifths,” and NAER's math glossary reads 3 2/5 as san you wu fen zhi er. Both write the whole number to the left of the fraction.
  • Taiwan's order: unit fractions by folding paper in Grade 2 (N-2-10, continuous quantities only); same-denominator fractions in Grade 3 (N-3-9), where the notes say not to use the terms proper and improper fraction and not to teach mixed numbers yet; those terms, mixed numbers, and adding with the same denominator in Grade 4 (N-4-5); equivalent fractions and “simple” unlike denominators, where one denominator is a multiple of the other, also in Grade 4 (N-4-6); and reducing, expanding, and common denominators in Grade 5 (N-5-4).
  • Finding a common denominator is taught differently. The Common Core's Grade 5 example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12, comes with the general rule a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd, which multiplies the denominators. Taiwan's N-5-4 note says the opposite: multiplying the denominators directly is not encouraged. OpenStax teaches the least common denominator.
  • Models and words. U.S. materials talk about “fraction tiles” (OpenStax) and require that compared fractions “refer to the same whole” (Common Core 3.NF.A.3.d). Taiwan's curriculum lists fraction circles and starts with continuous quantities. This page uses strips of equal length so that “the same whole” is always visible; the Common Core limits Grade 3 to denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.

Paper Strip Fractions

You need ·

  • Five paper strips of the same length for each student, about 24 cm long每人五條一樣長的紙條,約 24 公分
  • Ruler, pencil, scissors, and two colors

Steps · 步驟

  1. Keep one strip whole. Fold the second in half, and mark the third into thirds with the ruler (every 8 cm). Mark the fourth into sixths (every 4 cm).
  2. Color one half and one third. Lay them end to end on top of the whole strip. Is the total more or less than the whole?
  3. Use the sixths strip to measure: how many sixths cover the half? How many cover the third? How many cover both together?
  4. On the fifth strip, mark fifths (every 4.8 cm) and color two fifths. Compare it with the half. What does that tell you about 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5?

Folding paper is how Taiwan's Grade 2 begins (N-2-10), and the strips keep the same whole in view, as the Common Core asks (3.NF.A.3.d). Choosing 24 cm makes halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths come out in whole centimeters; fifths do not, which is itself a good discussion point.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

Is It Reasonable?

You need ·

  • Cards with fraction sums, some right and some wrong, such as 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5, 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2, 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, and 1/3 + 1/6 = 1/2寫著分數加法的卡片,有對有錯,例如 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5、1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2、2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7、1/3 + 1/6 = 1/2
  • A number line from 0 to 2 on the board, with 1/2 and 1 marked

Steps · 步驟

  1. Without calculating, decide for each card: could this be right? Use 1/2 and 1 as landmarks.
  2. Explain each “no” in one sentence, such as “The answer is smaller than one of the parts.”
  3. Check the “maybe” cards with strips or by finding a common denominator.「

This is the reasoning the Common Core asks for in Grade 5: “recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.” Students who learn to ask “Is it reasonable?” catch the add-the-bottoms mistake on their own.
