Count across
One row at a time. Each row has 4, so the running total goes up by fours: three fours make 12.

Set cubes on a tray in 3 rows of 4, count across, count down, and then turn the whole tray. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away, so 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 must be the same. Then fold a multiplication table in half and see how much less there is to learn.
Things set out in equal rows can be counted row by row or column by column. Both ways count every piece exactly once, so both give the same total. That is why the order of the two numbers in a multiplication does not change the answer.

The tray starts with 3 rows of 4 cubes. Press Count across to count one row at a time, or Count down to count one column at a time, and watch the running total beside each group. Then press Turn the tray: the same cubes become 4 rows of 3. Use the two sliders to build any tray from 1 × 1 to 10 × 10, and switch on Push together to turn the cubes into a rectangle whose area you can read off.

A teaching model. The big number is always the number of cubes actually drawn on the tray, from 1 to 100. Turning the tray only changes the direction you look from; the model swaps “rows” and “in each row” after the turn is finished. A picture like this shows why the order does not matter for whole numbers you can lay out in rows. It is a convincing picture, not a formal proof.

Reading ·
Put twelve small cubes on a tray in neat rows: three rows, with four cubes in each row. Now count them. You could count one row at a time: four, eight, twelve. Your friend is sitting at the side of the table, and from there the tray looks different. Your friend sees four rows, with three cubes in each, and counts three, six, nine, twelve. You counted three fours. Your friend counted four threes. You both got twelve. Is that just luck?
It is not luck, and you can see why without doing any arithmetic. Each of you counted every cube on the tray exactly once. Nobody added a cube, and nobody took one away. The cubes did not care which way you were facing. In fact, you can skip the second chair. Just turn the tray a quarter of the way around. Three rows of four become four rows of three, and the pile is still the same pile.
Counting equal groups like this is what multiplication is for. We write 3 × 4 and read it “three times four.” The numbers we multiply are called factors, and the answer is called the product. Things set out in rows and columns, like the cubes on the tray, make an array. Because an array can be counted by its rows or by its columns, 3 × 4 and 4 × 3 have the same product. Changing the order of the factors does not change the product. Mathematicians call this the commutative property of multiplication.
This one idea saves a great deal of work. A multiplication table from 1 × 1 to 10 × 10 has one hundred squares. But every square off the diagonal has a twin: 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 are both 56. Fold the table along the diagonal, and each square lands on its twin. That leaves only fifty-five different facts to learn instead of one hundred. Learn one, and you know two.
The same picture explains area. Push the cubes together until they touch, and they make a rectangle four units long and three units wide. Its area is twelve square units, because twelve unit squares cover it. Turn the rectangle, and it is three units long and four units wide. It is the same rectangle, so it has the same area. Finding the area of a rectangle and counting an array are the same job.
Be careful, though. Not every operation lets you swap. Addition does: 3 + 4 and 4 + 3 are both 7. Subtraction and division do not: 7 − 3 is 4, but 3 − 7 is not, and 12 ÷ 4 is 3, but 4 ÷ 12 is not. Order matters in daily life, too. Putting on your socks and then your shoes is not the same as shoes and then socks! One more thing: classrooms in different countries write the same tray in different orders. In the end both orders give twelve, and now you know why.

1. A tray has 5 rows of 6 cubes. You turn it a quarter turn. What do you see now?
2. You know that 7 × 8 = 56. What is 8 × 7?
3. In 3 × 4 = 12, what is the 12 called?
4. Which of these is NOT true?
5. A rectangle is 4 units long and 3 units wide. What is its area?
Try It in the Model ·
Then try a square tray, such as 5 rows of 5, and turn it. What changes this time?
One row at a time. Each row has 4, so the running total goes up by fours: three fours make 12.
The same tray, one column at a time. Each column has 3, so the total goes up by threes: four threes make 12.
Watch the whole tray swing a quarter turn. Keep your eye on the cubes: none appears, and none disappears.
Forty-two cubes slide together into one rectangle. Counting the cubes and finding the area turn out to be the same thing.

Stories Behind the Times Sign ·
Four short stories about multiplying and swapping.
Euclid ·
Euclid's Elements, a mathematics book from ancient Greece, states it as Proposition 16 of Book VII: “If two numbers multiplied by one another make certain numbers, then the numbers so produced equal one another.” In today's words: A times B equals B times A. Euclid did not leave it as something obvious. He gave a proof.
用今天的話說,就是 A 乘 B 等於 B 乘 A。
The Sign · 符號
The cross for multiplication was used by the English mathematician William Oughtred in his book Clavis Mathematicae, published in London in 1631. It had appeared a little earlier, in 1618, in an unsigned appendix that is believed to be his as well. Not everyone liked it. In 1698 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz wrote in a letter to John Bernoulli, “I do not like X as a symbol for multiplication, as it is easily confounded with x.” He preferred a dot. That is why, once letters arrive in algebra, you will see a · b or just ab.
Nine Nines · 九九
In 2014 the journal Nature reported on twenty-one bamboo strips kept at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Dated to around 305 BC, they form what the report calls the world's oldest decimal multiplication table. Other old Chinese tables, from the Qin dynasty, were written as short sentences such as “six eights beget forty-eight.” The table is still recited in Chinese in the same short way: just the two numbers and the answer. The table from one to nine is called the jiu-jiu table, the “nine-nine” table.
A Long Word ·
The earliest known use of the word commutative for a rule like this is from 1814, in French, by François Joseph Servois. It is a grown-up word, and both countries' guidelines say so. The U.S. Common Core standards add a note to Grade 3: “Students need not use formal terms for these properties.” Taiwan's guidelines for Grade 2 say that lessons should not use the term at all. The idea matters. The name can wait.
Myth vs. Fact ·
3 × 4 and 4 × 3 look different, so they must be different amounts.3 × 4 和 4 × 3 寫起來不一樣,所以一定不一樣多。
✓ Fact · 事實They are two ways of counting the same tray. Three rows of four and four rows of three both hold 12.
If the totals are equal, the two stories are the same.
Three bags of four apples and four bags of three apples both hold 12 apples, but they are different pictures. The total is the same; the number of bags is not.
You can swap the numbers in any operation.
Addition and multiplication are commutative. Subtraction and division are not: 12 ÷ 4 is 3, but 4 ÷ 12 is not.
To know the times table, you must memorize 100 separate facts.
Because of the twins, a 10 × 10 table holds only 55 different facts. Understanding the table first leaves much less to remember.

The count is 55: 10 on the diagonal plus 45 pairs. A teacher note in TERC's Investigations curriculum goes one step further: once the ×1, ×2, ×5, and ×10 facts are known, there are 21 facts left to learn, assuming students use the commutative property. The point is not speed. It is that understanding the table shrinks it.
