While you sleep, your brain saves what you learned and your body grows and repairs itself. Travel through a whole night of sleep in 3D, and count your own sleep hours.
Sleep is not switching off. Your brain moves through stages all night, saving what you learned, while your body releases growth hormone and repairs itself.

Press play, or drag the time from bedtime to morning. The chart under the model shows the stages of a typical night: light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep, the stage with the most vivid dreams. Watch what changes. In deep sleep the brain waves turn big and slow, and growth hormone flows. In REM sleep the eyes dart, the brain lights up, and the big muscles are switched off. Outside the window, the moon crosses the sky.

The skeleton is a real one from BodyParts3D, lying down; the brain, the eyes, the heart, the two small glands, and the room are our own drawing. The night shown here is a typical pattern, not a measurement: real nights differ from person to person and from night to night. Time is sped up: one second here is 15 minutes. The brain-wave line is a drawing of what a sleep lab records, and the dots show when hormones are released, not how much.

You will spend about a third of your life asleep. It can seem like a waste of time: you lie still, your eyes are closed, and nothing happens. But sleep is not like switching off a light. Your brain stays busy all night, and your body uses the quiet hours to do jobs it cannot do well while you are running around.
Sleep comes in stages. First comes light sleep: your muscles relax, and your heartbeat and breathing slow down. Next comes deep sleep, when your brain waves turn big and slow and it is very hard to wake you. Then comes REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement, because your eyes dart around under your eyelids. In REM sleep your brain is almost as busy as when you are awake, and you have your most vivid dreams. Your big muscles are switched off, so you do not act your dreams out. Scientists in Chicago first described REM sleep in 1953.
The stages repeat in cycles, and in an adult one cycle takes about an hour and a half. You go through several cycles each night, but they are not all the same. Most of your deep sleep comes in the first few hours. The REM periods start short and grow longer toward morning. So if you go to bed too late, you lose deep sleep, and if you get up too early, you lose dreams.
What is all this for? One job is memory. Sleep helps your brain turn what you learned today into long-term memories. That is why a good night's sleep before a test helps more than staying up late to study. Another job is growing. Your body releases growth hormone during deep sleep, which helps you grow and helps your body repair itself. Sleep also helps you fight germs: people who do not sleep enough are more likely to catch colds.
How does your body know when to sleep? You have a body clock deep inside your brain, and it is set by light. When your eyes see daylight, the clock knows it is day. In the evening, as it gets dark, your brain starts to release a hormone called melatonin, which tells the body that night has come. Bright light late in the evening, including the light from screens, can stop your brain from releasing melatonin. Then you do not feel sleepy, even when your body needs rest.
How much sleep do you need? More than adults do. Sleep doctors say children from 6 to 12 years old need 9 to 12 hours every night, and teenagers need 8 to 10. You can help your body clock. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Turn off screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Keep your room dark, quiet, and cool, and skip tea and cola in the evening. Now use the sleep calculator below the model: how many hours did you sleep last night?

It starts to rise in the evening and is highest in the early morning hours. Bright light late in the evening can hold it back.

Myth vs. Fact ·
When you sleep, your brain switches off.
Your brain stays busy all night. In REM sleep it is almost as active as when you are awake.
✗ Myth · 迷思Some people never dream.

Staying up late to study helps you remember more.
Sleep is when your brain turns the day's lessons into long-term memories. Cut the sleep, and you cut the saving.
Watching videos in bed is a good way to get sleepy.
Bright light late in the evening can stop your brain from releasing melatonin. Turn screens off at least 30 minutes before bedtime.

Taiwanese grandparents say 一暝大一寸 (chi̍t-mî tōa chi̍t-chhùn) to a sleeping baby: “one night, one inch bigger.” Nobody grows an inch in a night, but the saying holds a truth that science found much later: the body releases growth hormone during deep sleep. Mandarin has 早睡早起身體好, “early to bed and early to rise is good for your health,” and English has an old rhyme that says almost the same thing: “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
華語說「早睡早起身體好」,英文也有一句幾乎一樣的老話:“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”(早睡早起,使人健康、富有又聰明。)

Teaching tip: this is good practice with time: the hours cross midnight, so students cannot simply subtract. Keep the results private or anonymous, because bedtimes depend on family schedules that children do not control. Look for patterns in the whole class instead of comparing students.

Teaching tip: this is a real experiment with a real weakness, and it is worth saying so: three nights is a small sample, and students know which nights are which. Ask them how they would make the test fairer. Send a note home first, so that families can join in.
