Why Does Your Back Need Care?

Your spine is a tower of bones and soft cushions that holds you up all day. Load a backpack onto a real 3D spine, tilt the head toward a phone, and check your own school bag.

Big idea ·

Your spine is a stack of bones with soft discs between them. Its gentle curves work like a spring, and it stays healthy when the load is light, close, and balanced.

3D Model · 3D 模型

Load the Spine

You are looking at a real spine from the side. Find its curves: in at the neck, out at the upper back, in again at the lower back. The colored cushions between the bones are the discs. Now slide the weight of the backpack up, and watch the discs in the lower back change color as they are pressed harder. Try one strap, and try wearing the bag too low. Then put the bag down and tilt the head forward, the way you look at a phone.

The bones and 22 of the discs are real shapes from BodyParts3D, in their real places; the data has no file for one disc, so we drew that one, along with the spinal cord and the backpack. The colors of the discs show a pattern, not measured pressure, and the lean of the body is a drawing of what people tend to do under a load. How a real back responds depends on the person, the bag, and how long it is carried.

Unit 23: Why Does Your Back Need Care?

Reach behind you and run a finger down the middle of your back. Do you feel a row of bumps? Each bump is the back of one bone of your spine. The spine is the tower that holds you up, from your hips to your head, all day long.

The tower is not one bone but many. Each one is called a vertebra. There are seven in your neck, twelve in your upper back, and five in your lower back. Below them, five more are joined together into one bone called the sacrum, and at the very bottom is the little tailbone. Altogether a baby starts with about 33, and 24 of them stay separate so that you can bend and twist.

Between the separate bones lie 23 soft cushions called discs. A disc has a tough ring on the outside and a soft gel in the middle, a little like a jelly doughnut. The discs let your spine bend, and they soak up the bumps when you run and jump. Do you remember that you are a little taller in the morning than at night? During the day your discs are squeezed, and at night, when you lie down, they fill up again.

Look at a spine from the side, and you will see that it is not straight. It curves in at the neck, out at the upper back, and in again at the lower back. A newborn baby has only one long curve. The neck curve forms when the baby learns to hold up its head, and the lower curve forms when the child learns to walk. These curves make the spine stronger and springier, like the bends in a spring.

The spine has a second job. Every vertebra has a hole in it, and the holes line up to make a long tunnel. Inside the tunnel runs your spinal cord, the thick bundle of nerves that carries messages between your brain and your body. You met it in the lesson about the brain. The bones of your spine are its armor.

So how do you take care of your back? Keep the load light: Taiwan's Ministry of Education suggests that a school bag should weigh no more than one eighth of your body weight. Wear both straps, and pull them snug so that the bag sits high and close. Put the heaviest books next to your back. Lift your phone or book up instead of dropping your head. And move! Your back likes changing position much more than it likes sitting still. Now check your own school bag with the tool below the model.

Questions ·

What lies between the separate bones of your spine, and what does it do?

Soft cushions called discs. They let the spine bend, and they soak up bumps.

What are the two jobs of the spine?

It holds your body up, and it protects the spinal cord inside it.

Name three ways to take care of your back when you carry a school bag.

Keep the bag light (no more than one eighth of your body weight), wear both straps and pull them snug, and put the heaviest books next to your back.

Quick Check ·

1. How many separate bones in your spine let you bend and twist?

2. What is a disc like?

3. What does the spine look like from the side?

4. What runs through the tunnel inside the spine?

5. According to Taiwan's Ministry of Education, how heavy should a school bag be at most?

The Tower ·

Five parts of the spine, from top to bottom

Why a stack and not one long bone? One bone could not bend. A stack with cushions in between can bend a little at every level, and all those little bends add up to touching your toes.

How heavy is my school bag?

Use the bag check below the model. You need a scale. The numbers stay on your screen: nothing is saved or sent anywhere. The tool looks only at the bag.

  1. ⚖️Weigh the bag · 秤書包Put your packed school bag on the scale. If the scale cannot read something so light, stand on it with the bag and without it, and subtract.
  2. 🧮Find the share · 算出比例Type the two numbers into the tool. It shows what share of your body weight the bag is, next to the one-eighth line.
Over the line? Take everything out. What do you really need today? What could stay at school?

Myth vs. Fact ·

Four things people get wrong

A healthy spine is perfectly straight.

Seen from the side, a healthy spine has curves. They make it stronger and springier.

The spine and the spinal cord are the same thing.

The spine is bone. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs inside it.

It does not matter how you carry a bag, only how heavy it is.

Both matter. The same bag pulls harder when it hangs low or from one shoulder.

Sitting very still and very straight is the best thing for your back.

Your back likes to move. Change your position often, and get up and stretch.

Two straps, high and snug

Both shoulders, straps pulled snug, heavy books next to your back.

In Chinese ·

Backbone and Dragon Bone

In English, to say that someone is brave and will not give in, you say she “has backbone.” Chinese uses the same picture: a person who stands up for what is right is said to 挺直腰桿 (tǐngzhí yāogǎn), “straighten the back,” and the people a country depends on are called its 脊梁 (jǐliang), its spine. In Taiwanese, the spine has an even grander name: 龍骨 (lêng-kut), the “dragon bone.” The long central beam at the bottom of a ship is also called 龍骨 in Chinese, and “keel” in English. A ship and a person are built the same way: one strong line down the middle, and everything else hangs from it.

Classroom Activity 1 ·

Build a Spine

You need ·

  • Eight empty thread spools or thick slices of a cardboard tube
  • Eight pieces of kitchen sponge with a hole in the middle
  • A piece of string, 50 centimeters long一條 50 公分長的繩子

Steps · 步驟

  1. Thread the spools onto the string with nothing between them, and tie the ends. Try to bend the tower.
  2. Now take it apart and build it again, with a piece of sponge between every two spools.
  3. Bend the new tower. What is different?
  4. Press down on the top. What happens to the sponges?

Teaching tip: hard pieces alone grind against each other and hardly bend. Hard and soft together bend smoothly and spring back. Pressing down shows the discs being squeezed, which is why we are a little shorter by evening. The string stands for the spinal cord.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

The School Bag Survey

You need ·

  • A bathroom scale or a luggage scale
  • A chart on the board

Steps · 步驟

  1. Weigh every school bag in the class. Weigh only the bags, not the students.
  2. Mark each weight with an X on the chart. No names are needed.
  3. What is the lightest bag? The heaviest? What weight is the most common?
  4. Empty one heavy bag together. What is in it that could stay at school?

Teaching tip: weigh the bags only, and keep the chart anonymous. Children do not need to share their body weight with anyone; they can use the tool on this page privately at home. The useful discussion is about the bags: water bottles, books for other days, and what the class could keep in the classroom.

This lesson is for learning about the body. It is not medical advice, and it is not about anyone's weight: the tool looks only at the bag. If your back, neck, or shoulders hurt often, or if you feel numbness or tingling in your arms or legs, tell an adult and see a doctor.
