Half full半滿
With six riders the car weighs 1,420 kg and the counterweight 1,450 kg. The motor holds only 30 kg: almost a perfect balance.

An elevator car hangs on one end of its cables, and a heavy counterweight hangs on the other. Add riders to a 3D elevator, take the counterweight away to see how hard the motor has to work, then cut the cables and watch the safety brakes catch the car.
An elevator does not lift its whole weight. Steel cables run over a wheel at the top of the building, with the car on one end and a counterweight of about the same weight on the other. The two sides nearly balance, like a seesaw, so the motor only has to move the small difference between them.

Drag to turn the view, and scroll or pinch to zoom. The car rides up and down while the gray counterweight moves the opposite way. Slide the riders from 0 to 12 and watch “Motor holds” shrink to almost nothing near 6 riders. Turn the counterweight off to see what the motor would have to hold alone. Then press “Cut all the cables.”

A teaching model. The weights are example numbers: a 1,000 kg car that can carry 1,000 kg, riders of 70 kg each, and a 1,450 kg counterweight. Real elevators differ. The floors are drawn shorter than real ones, and the cables' own weight is left out. The drop after the cables are cut (about half a meter here) is calculated for this model only.

Step into an elevator, press a button, and a small room carries you and ten other people up the building. At Taipei 101, the elevator takes visitors from the 5th floor to the 89th in only 37 seconds. A full elevator car can weigh more than a family car. How can a motor lift something that heavy, again and again, all day long?
The secret is hidden in the shaft, where riders never see it. Strong steel cables are tied to the top of the car. They go up, over a wheel at the top of the building, and down the other side. There they hold a tall stack of heavy metal blocks called the counterweight. When the car goes up, the counterweight comes down. When the car comes down, the counterweight goes up.
Think of a seesaw with two children of the same weight. A tiny push sends one up and the other down. An elevator works the same way. The counterweight weighs about as much as the car plus half of the riders it can carry. With the car half full, the two sides balance almost perfectly, and the motor hardly has to work.
So the motor never lifts the whole car. It only moves the difference between the two sides. In our model, a full car weighs 1,840 kilograms, but the motor has to hold only 390 kilograms. An empty car is lighter than the counterweight, so it wants to rise by itself, and the motor holds it back. Either way, the elevator uses far less energy.
What if a cable breaks? Long ago, people were afraid of exactly that. In 1853 an American, Elisha Otis, invented a safety brake. The next year, at a fair in New York, he stood on a platform high in the air and had the rope cut. The platform stopped at once. His brake gripped the rails on both sides and held him there.
Elevators today are even safer. A car hangs on several cables, and each cable alone is strong enough to hold a full car. A device called a governor watches the speed. If the car ever moves down too fast, brakes on the car grip the rails and stop it. So ride without fear, but in a fire or after an earthquake, always take the stairs.

Watch the two bars in the panel: the green one is what the motor holds with a counterweight, and the red one is what it would hold without it.
With six riders the car weighs 1,420 kg and the counterweight 1,450 kg. The motor holds only 30 kg: almost a perfect balance.

A full car weighs 1,840 kg, but the motor holds only the 390 kg difference. The counterweight carries the rest.
Take the counterweight away and the motor must hold all 1,840 kg by itself, nearly five times as much. In the model, the motor glows orange.
Every cable is cut at once. The car begins to fall, the governor feels the speed, and the red safety brakes grip the rails.

Myth vs. Fact ·
The motor lifts the whole weight of the car and everyone in it.
The counterweight balances most of that weight. The motor only moves the difference between the two sides.
If a cable breaks, the elevator falls all the way to the bottom.
A car hangs on several cables, and each one alone can hold it. If it still moves down too fast, safety brakes grip the rails.
A heavier counterweight is always better.
Too heavy is as bad as too light. It is sized to balance a car that is about half full, the middle of what the elevator carries.
In a fire, the elevator is the fastest way out.
Never use an elevator in a fire. The power may go out and trap you inside. Take the stairs.
Car on one side, counterweight on the other. One goes up, the other comes down.
The motor does not lift the car. It moves the difference between the two sides.
The counterweight matches a half-full car, so that is when the motor works least.
A governor watches the speed. Too fast going down, and the brakes grip the rails.
