Rolling fast
Give it a push: it leans, the front wheel turns under it, and it stands up again.

A bike with nobody on it can balance itself, as long as it keeps rolling. Push a riderless 3D bike sideways, watch its front wheel steer under the lean, then slow it down or lock the front wheel and see it fall.
When a moving bike starts to lean to one side, its front wheel turns toward that side. That steers the wheels back underneath the bike and stands it up again. The faster the bike rolls, the better this works. A bike that is too slow, standing still, or unable to steer cannot catch itself, so it falls.

Drag to turn the view, and scroll or pinch to zoom. The bike is rolling with no rider. Press “Push it sideways” and watch the front wheel turn toward the lean and the yellow front-wheel track swing out under the bike. Slide the speed down to see when it can no longer catch itself, and lock the front wheel to see what steering is for.

A simplified model, not the full equations of a real bicycle. The bike is treated like a pole that tips over, and a single rule stands for everything that makes a real front wheel turn toward a lean (the shape of the fork, where the weight sits, and the spinning wheels all play a part). In this model the bike can catch itself above about 10 km/h; real bikes differ, and a rider helps a lot.

Reading ·
Do you remember learning to ride a bike? Going slowly, you wobbled and fell. Then one day you pedaled a little faster, and suddenly the bike stayed up, almost by itself. Stop at a red light, though, and you have to put a foot down right away. Why is a bike so easy to balance when it is moving and impossible when it is standing still?
The first two-wheeler was built by Karl Drais in Germany in 1817. It had no pedals; riders pushed along the ground with their feet. Drais noticed that he could keep his balance by steering the front wheel. In 1885, John Kemp Starley's Rover, with a chain driving the rear wheel, became the first modern bicycle. Today Taiwan is one of the world's great bicycle makers: Giant began in Taichung in 1972, and Merida has its headquarters in Dacun, right here in Changhua County.
Here is the secret. When a moving bike starts to lean to the right, its front wheel turns to the right too. The bike begins to curve to the right, and that carries the wheels back underneath the falling bike. It is like balancing a broom on your hand: when the broom tips, you move your hand under it. A bike does the same thing with its wheels.
Speed matters. When the bike is going fast, a small turn of the front wheel quickly brings the wheels back under it. When the bike is going slowly, the same turn hardly moves the wheels sideways at all, so the bike keeps falling. And when the bike is standing still, steering cannot help. That is why slow riding is wobbly and why you put your foot down when you stop.
A bike can even do this with nobody on it. Push a riderless bike fast enough, let go, and it will roll along upright, steering itself whenever it starts to tip. For a long time people said that the spinning wheels held the bike up, like a spinning top. But in 2011, scientists built a strange little bike that canceled out the spinning effect, and it still balanced. They showed that no single thing keeps a bike up. The shape of the front fork, where the weight sits, and the spinning wheels all work together.
When you ride, you are part of the system. You make tiny steering corrections all the time without thinking about them, turning the handlebars toward the side you are falling to. You even start a turn by steering the other way for an instant, so that the bike leans into the turn. Your brain learned all of this the day the bike finally stayed up.

Myth vs. Fact ·
The spinning wheels hold a bike up, like a spinning top.
Spinning wheels help a little, but in 2011 scientists built a bike that canceled that effect, and it still balanced. Steering under the lean is what matters most.
You balance a bike by keeping the handlebars perfectly straight.
You stay up by steering all the time, in tiny movements toward whichever side you start to fall.
Riding slowly is safer because it is easier to balance.
Very slow riding is the hardest to balance. Ride at a steady, moderate speed, and slow down by braking early, not by creeping.
A bike can only stay up if someone is riding it.
A riderless bike pushed fast enough will roll along upright, steering itself when it tips.
