A wing flies by pushing air down. Step into a 3D wind tunnel, tilt the wing, change the speed until lift beats weight, release a line of smoke, and push the angle too far to see a stall.
機翼靠著把空氣往下推飛起來。走進 3D 風洞,調整機翼角度、加快速度直到升力大過重量,放一排煙,再把角度拉太大,看看什麼是失速。
A wing meets the air at a small angle and turns the air flowing past it downward. Pushing air down pushes the wing up, and that upward push is called lift. The faster the plane goes, the more lift its wings make, so a plane races down the runway until the lift is bigger than its weight.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. In a wind tunnel the wing stays still and the air rushes past it. Tilt the wing, change the speed, and watch the lift arrow grow until lift beats weight. Release a line of smoke to see which air reaches the back of the wing first, then tilt the wing too far to make it stall.

A diagram. The airflow is calculated with a classic math model of a wing (the Joukowski airfoil), which shows the faster air on top and the air turned downward behind the wing, but slowed down so you can follow it. That model cannot show a stall by itself, so above about 15 degrees the lift is reduced and the air on top is drawn as swirls. The model plane's weight is set so that it lifts off at about 250 km/h with the wing tilted 8 degrees.

At Taoyuan International Airport, a huge jet rolls onto the runway. Its engines roar, it races faster and faster, and then its nose lifts and the whole plane climbs into the sky. A passenger jet is very heavy, much heavier than the air around it. So how can something so heavy stay up in the air?
People dreamed of flying for thousands of years. On December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville Wright made the first powered airplane flight in the Wright brothers' Flyer. It lasted just 12 seconds and covered about 37 meters. Today flying is ordinary: in 2025, Taoyuan International Airport alone handled about 47.8 million passengers.
The secret is in the wing. A wing is shaped and tilted so that it meets the air at a small angle. As the plane races forward, the wing turns the air flowing past it, pushing a huge amount of air downward every second. Pushing air down pushes the wing up, just as pushing down on the ground with your legs lifts you into the air when you jump. This upward push is called lift.
Look closely at the air flowing around a wing, and you will see that the air over the top moves faster than the air underneath, and its pressure is lower. Many books say the air on top must hurry to meet the air underneath at the back of the wing. NASA explains that this is wrong: the air over the top actually gets to the back first. The lower pressure on top and the air pushed downward are two parts of the same story.
Lift grows quickly with speed. If a plane goes twice as fast, its wings make four times as much lift. That is why a plane races down the runway: it must go fast enough for the lift to be bigger than its weight. Tilting the wing up a little more gives more lift too, but only up to a point. If the angle gets too steep, the air can no longer follow the top of the wing, and the lift suddenly drops. This is called a stall.
A flying plane is a balance of four forces. Lift pushes it up, and weight pulls it down. Thrust from the engines pushes it forward, and drag from the air pulls it back. When lift is bigger than weight, the plane climbs, and when thrust is bigger than drag, it speeds up. Birds, paper airplanes, and giant jets all fly by the same rules.
