A typhoon can be hundreds of kilometers wide, yet it starts as nothing more than warm, wet air rising from the sea. In a 3D model, watch a loose patch of cloud grow into a spinning storm with an eye in the middle. Cut it open to see where the air goes, then move it over land and watch what happens. Last, follow the eye of a typhoon as it passes right over your town.
A typhoon is a huge, spinning storm that is born over a warm tropical sea. Warm, moist air rises, and more air flows in to take its place and begins to circle. When the water vapor in the rising air turns into cloud, it gives out heat, which makes the air rise even faster. So the storm feeds itself as long as it stays over warm water. Over land it loses its supply and grows weaker.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. The white puffs are cloud, and the small blue dots are air flowing in along the sea. Let it play, and watch the wind speed climb while the storm stays over warm sea. When does an eye appear? Choose Cut open to look inside. Then press Over land and watch the numbers.

A teaching model. A real typhoon is very wide and very flat: its strong winds reach 200 to 300 kilometers from the center, but it is only a little more than 10 kilometers high. The model is drawn far taller than that, and its eye is drawn larger, so you can see inside. The strength levels and the wind scale follow the Central Weather Administration. How fast the storm grows and fades in the model was chosen to make the animation easy to watch; a real typhoon takes days.

Reading ·
Every summer and fall, people in Taiwan watch the weather report closely. Somewhere far out over the Pacific, a patch of cloud has begun to turn. A few days later it may arrive as a typhoon, with wind strong enough to pull up trees and rain enough to fill a river in hours.
A typhoon begins over a warm tropical sea. The sun heats the water, and a lot of it turns into water vapor. The air above the sea becomes warm and moist, so it is light, and it rises. Cooler air from all around flows in to take its place, and then it rises too. The air pressure in the middle becomes lower and lower.
The air does not flow straight to the middle. Because the Earth spins, the air curves, and it begins to circle the center. North of the equator, it turns counterclockwise. Now the storm has a shape: long bands of cloud winding in toward the middle.
Then the storm starts to feed itself. As the moist air rises, its water vapor cools and turns into cloud and rain. This change gives out heat. The heat makes the air rise even faster, which pulls in more moist air from the sea. When the wind near the center reaches 17.2 meters a second, which is about 62 kilometers an hour, we call the storm a typhoon.
A strong typhoon has a strange thing at its center: an eye. Inside the eye there is almost no wind and no rain, and you may even see the sun or the stars. But right at the edge of the eye is a ring of thick cloud where the wind and rain are the strongest of all. From there outward, they slowly grow weaker.
A typhoon cannot live without warm sea. When it moves over land, there is far less water vapor to feed it, and mountains and rough ground break up its shape. It grows weaker, and in the end it fades away. Most typhoons last from four or five days to a little more than ten. That is long enough to cross an ocean, so the safest thing we can do is follow the warnings and get ready early.

Sometimes the center of a typhoon passes right over a town. The people there feel five different things, one after another. Press the numbers to follow the storm, and watch out for stage 3.
The red dot is your town. ·
This follows the Central Weather Administration. The drawing shows the town moving across the storm; in real life it is the storm that moves. The wind bar shows only weaker and stronger, not a measured speed. A real typhoon leaves slowly, never suddenly.

Typhoons by the Numbers ·
From the size of the eye to the list of names.
When the strongest wind near the center reaches 62 kilometers an hour (17.2 meters a second), the storm is called a typhoon.
From 1958 to 2025, about 26 typhoons a year formed in the northwestern Pacific and the South China Sea. August had the most.
The eye of a typhoon is about 45 kilometers wide on average. Small ones are 10 to 20 kilometers, and large ones can reach 100 to 150.
On average, the strong winds of a typhoon reach this far from the center. In a large typhoon they reach 400 to 500 kilometers.
When the eye passes over a place, the calm usually lasts only this long. Then the wind and rain come back.
Typhoons in this part of the world take their names from a list of 140. Each of 14 countries and regions gave 10.
Typhoon Stories ·
Four things people say about typhoons, and where they come from.
Word · 字源
Many people think the word came from the Cantonese for “big wind.” Another idea is that it came from Taiwanese. An old book about Taiwan describes how people saw wind and rain whirl in from every side, turning in the air like a sieve, and so they called it “wind sieve.” To this day, the Taiwanese word for a typhoon is hong-thai, with “wind” in front.
World · 世界
Typhoons do not happen only near Taiwan. The same kind of storm forms over other tropical seas, but it has other names. In the western North Pacific and the South China Sea it is a typhoon. In the western Atlantic and the eastern North Pacific it is a hurricane. Over the Indian Ocean it is a cyclone. Scientists use one name for all of them: tropical cyclone.
Names · 命名
Since the year 2000, typhoons in this region have taken their names from a shared list. The names are not only people's names. There are animals, plants, stars, places, and figures from old stories. When a typhoon causes a great disaster, its name is taken off the list and replaced. In Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration reports each typhoon mainly by its number, with the name beside it.
Taiwan · 台灣
Weather forecasters in Taiwan sometimes use two informal names. A “wind typhoon” has strong wind but not much rain. A “rain typhoon” has weaker wind but a great deal of rain. So the strength level in the news does not tell you everything. A typhoon that is called mild can still bring dangerous rain.
Myth vs. Fact ·
The wind and rain have stopped, so the typhoon is over.
A sudden calm may be the eye. In about 20 to 30 minutes the storm can return from the opposite direction. A typhoon that is really leaving fades slowly.
The strongest wind is in the very middle of a typhoon.
The middle is the eye, which is calm. The strongest wind is at the edge of the eye.
✗ Myth · 迷思Typhoons happen only near Taiwan.
The same storms form over other tropical seas. They are called hurricanes or cyclones there.
A mild typhoon is nothing to worry about.
The level describes only the wind near the center. A mild typhoon still has winds of force 8 to 11, and it may bring very heavy rain.
