Taiwan records about 40,000 earthquakes a year, and people can feel about 1,000 of them. Why here? In a 3D model, watch one plate push against another until a stuck fault suddenly slips. Then find out why your phone can ring a few seconds before the shaking starts.
The Earth's surface is made of huge plates that move a few centimeters a year. Taiwan sits where two of them meet, and one pushes hard against the other. The rock gets stuck, bends, and stores up force. When it can hold no more, it slips all at once. That sudden slip is an earthquake.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. This is a slice of the Earth's crust. The right side is pushed toward the left, but the sloping fault between them is stuck. Watch the rock bend and turn red as the force builds, and watch what happens when the fault gives way. Then choose a fault that is stuck harder and compare.

A teaching model, not to scale. The push of 7.5 centimeters a year follows the Central Weather Administration's figure of 7 to 8, but everything else is an example: real faults do not slip on a regular schedule, the plate's movement is shared among many faults, and the bending and slipping here are drawn hundreds of times too large so that you can see them. During the earthquake the model switches to slow motion.

Your phone makes a loud sound. A few seconds later, the lamp begins to swing and the floor moves under your feet. If you live in Taiwan, you know this feeling well. Taiwan records about 40,000 earthquakes every year. Most are too small to notice, but people can feel about 1,000 of them. Why does the ground here shake so often?
The answer begins with the Earth's outer shell. It is not one piece. It is broken into huge slabs of rock called plates, and the plates move very slowly, a few centimeters a year. Taiwan sits right where two plates meet: the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. The Philippine Sea Plate pushes toward the northwest at about 7 to 8 centimeters a year.
If the plates slid past each other smoothly, we would feel nothing. But rock is rough, and the plates get stuck along cracks called faults. The plate keeps pushing while the fault stays stuck, so the rock bends, a little like a plastic ruler. All that time, it is storing up force. At last the rock can hold no more. The fault slips suddenly, and the rock springs back. That is an earthquake.
The slip sends out waves through the ground. The fastest ones, called P waves, arrive first and usually shake gently. The S waves come next, and they shake harder. Instruments near the earthquake catch the first waves, and computers quickly send an alert. For places far enough away, the alert can arrive seconds, or even tens of seconds, before the strong shaking.
Most of Taiwan's earthquakes happen in the east, where the two plates meet. Yet earthquakes in the west often do more damage. They tend to be shallow, they happen under the land, and many people live there. A strong earthquake under a crowded plain is more dangerous than a stronger one far out at sea.
Can scientists tell us when the next big one will come? Not yet. No one can predict the time, place, and size of an earthquake. What we can do is be ready. When the ground shakes, drop down, take cover under a strong table, and hold on. The same push that shakes Taiwan also built its high mountains. Earthquakes are part of living on a young, growing island.

The Earthquake Alert ·
An earthquake alert is not a prediction. The earthquake has already begun, and the alert is racing the waves to reach you. Move the slider to change how far you are from the earthquake, and see who wins the race.
An example with round numbers: P waves at 7 kilometers a second, S waves at 4, and an alert sent 19 seconds after the earthquake begins. The Central Weather Administration says it needs about 15 to 20 seconds to work out where the earthquake is and 1 to 2 more to send the alert. Real waves change speed with the rock and the depth, so real warning times differ.
0 seconds · 秒
Try It in the Model ·
The 40 and 160 years are examples. Real faults do not keep a schedule, which is one reason earthquakes cannot be predicted.
The force never builds very high. The earthquakes are smaller, but there are more of them.
A long, quiet wait, and then a very large slip. Quiet does not mean safe.
Jump to the moment just before the slip. Watch the yellow ring race ahead of the red one.
Run the whole story again and watch the land on the right. Each slip lifts it a little higher.

Taiwan's Earthquakes by the Numbers ·
All six come from the agency that measures Taiwan's earthquakes.
About how many earthquakes Taiwan's instruments record in an ordinary year.
About how many of them are strong enough for people to feel.
How fast the Philippine Sea Plate pushes toward the northwest against the Eurasian Plate.
About how long it takes, after an earthquake on or near the island begins, to work out where it is.
Each step up in magnitude means about 32 times more energy. Two steps means about 1,000 times.
The most earthquakes recorded in one year, because of the great earthquake of September 21 and those that followed.
Earthquake Stories ·
Four stories about how we came to understand earthquakes.
1906
After the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the American scientist Harry Fielding Reid studied how the ground along a fault had moved in the fifty years before it. He saw that the land had been slowly bending the whole time. His idea, that rock stores force and then springs back, is called elastic rebound. It is still the main way we explain earthquakes.
The Chi-Chi earthquake of 1999 was caused by the Chelungpu Fault in central Taiwan. The ground broke along a line about 100 kilometers long. In some places one side moved as much as 7 meters sideways and 4 meters up. September 21 is now National Disaster Prevention Day, and on that morning phones across Taiwan receive a practice alert.
The Pacific ·
If you mark the world's earthquakes on a map, most of them fall along narrow bands. The biggest band runs all the way around the Pacific Ocean: through Japan, the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia to New Zealand, and down the west coasts of North and South America. About 90 percent of the world's earthquakes happen along it.
2016
On February 6, 2016, an earthquake struck Meinong in southern Taiwan. About 12 seconds after it began, the Central Weather Administration's system had worked out where it was. For Taipei, far to the north, that meant 49 seconds of warning before the strong shaking arrived. Close to the earthquake, though, there was no time at all.
Myth vs. Fact ·
Scientists can tell us when the next big earthquake will come.
Not yet. No one can predict the time, place, and size of an earthquake. That is why being ready matters.
Strange clouds or hot, still weather mean an earthquake is coming.
There is no evidence that weather and earthquakes are linked. So-called earthquake clouds are ordinary clouds, and earthquakes start deep underground.
The alert on my phone predicts the earthquake.
The earthquake has already started. The alert simply travels faster than the strong waves.
A place with many small earthquakes is safe from big ones.
Not so. A big earthquake can still happen there. Each step up in magnitude releases about 32 times more energy, so small ones cannot use it all up.
The Philippine Sea Plate pushes against the Eurasian Plate.
