How Computers Work · Unit 4 · Lesson 16 ·
Five stands in a row show the same thing, a switch, as it was built in 1937, 1946, 1947, 1971, and 2024: a relay, a vacuum tube, the first transistor, and two chips. Behind each stand is a column for how many switches one machine held, from 2 to 28 billion. Then compare any two, name the switch, and look back over all sixteen lessons.
A computer has always been the same idea: a great many switches. What changed is what the switches are made of and how small they are. Relays gave way to vacuum tubes, tubes to transistors, and separate transistors to chips that hold billions. Smaller switches mean more of them in the same space, and that is how a machine that filled a room came to fit in a pocket.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Each stand holds one kind of switch, in order of time from left to right. Choose a year, or press “Walk through the years.” The blue column behind each stand shows how many switches one machine, or one chip, held. Read the columns with care: each step up means ten times more, so a column that is a little taller stands for a great deal more.
Drag to turn ·
This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The five years and the card below still work, and so do the reading and the games.
A teaching model. The five switches are not drawn to scale: a real relay or vacuum tube can be held in the hand, while a transistor on today’s chips is far too small to see. The columns use a scale in which each step is ten times the one below, because on an ordinary scale the first four columns would be too short to see beside the fifth. The five examples were chosen because their numbers come from sources we could read; many other machines came in between.
Model and code are drawn and programmed by My Culture Connect. Every number has a named source, and the test in tools/computers/test/shrink.test.mjs refuses a number without one.
模型與程式由人師教育協會自行繪製、撰寫;每一個數字都有具名的來源,測試(tools/computers/test/shrink.test.mjs)不接受沒有來源的數字。
Reading ·
In Lesson 1 you worked eight switches by hand. Every lesson since then has been about switches too: switches wired into gates, gates into an adder, adders into a processor, and programs telling the processor what to do. One question is left. How did a machine made of switches shrink from the size of a room to something you carry in your pocket?
The first switches were relays. A relay is a switch moved by an electromagnet, so one electric current can turn another on and off. In 1937 George Stibitz built an adder from just two of them. But a relay has parts that move, and moving parts are slow. The next switch had no moving parts at all: the vacuum tube.
ENIAC, finished early in 1946, used more than 17,000 vacuum tubes. It was far faster than any relay machine: it could do up to 5,000 additions a second. It was also enormous. It filled a basement 50 feet long and 30 feet wide, and it gave off so much heat that it needed its own air conditioning.
Then, in December 1947, two researchers at Bell Labs made a switch inside a small piece of solid material. It was called a transistor. Nothing in it moved and nothing had to glow hot. Eleven years later came the next step: the integrated circuit, in which many parts are made together from one piece of material. We call it a chip.
From then on, the story is one of fitting more switches onto a chip. In 1971 the Intel 4004 put a whole processor on one chip, with 2,300 transistors. In 2024 Apple announced a chip with 28 billion. In 1965 Gordon Moore had noticed how quickly the number was growing; ten years later he described it as doubling every two years. That pattern became known as Moore’s law.
So the answer is simple to say and astonishing to think about. The idea never changed: a switch is off or on, 0 or 1. The switch itself changed, from a clicking relay to something far too small to see. Everything in these sixteen lessons, from adding two numbers to opening a web page, rests on that one idea, repeated an enormous number of times.

ENIAC
Britannica describes ENIAC as the first programmable general-purpose electronic digital computer. Its 40 panels stood in a U along three walls of a basement at the University of Pennsylvania, and each panel was about 2 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and 8 feet high. Besides its vacuum tubes it had 1,500 relays, so it stood between two ages. Changing its program meant rewiring it, which could take days.
December 16, 1947
The Computer History Museum describes the first transistor. John Bardeen and Walter Brattain pressed two closely spaced gold contacts, held by a plastic wedge, onto a small slab of very pure germanium. The voltage on one contact controlled the current through the other. A week later, on December 23, they showed it to others at the laboratory.
September 12, 1958
By the 1950s engineers were wiring together thousands of separate transistors, and the wiring itself had become the problem. According to the Computer History Museum, on September 12, 1958, Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments built a circuit whose transistor, capacitor, and resistor were all formed from pieces of germanium. That was the first integrated circuit. The chips series on this site tells how such circuits are made today.
1965, 1975
In 1965 Gordon Moore tried to predict the next ten years of integrated circuits. The Computer History Museum reports that he projected a doubling every 12 months, reaching 65,000 parts on a chip by 1975. In 1975 he looked again and slowed the rate to “a doubling every two years, rather than every year.” The museum calls it a prediction that became a self-fulfilling prophecy, one of the driving principles of the industry.
