Why Is the Sky Blue?

Sunlight looks white, so why is the sky blue and the sunset red? Watch light cross the air in 3D, slide the Sun down to the horizon, and see the sky change color over Changhua.

Big idea ·

Sunlight is every color mixed together. Air molecules are much smaller than light waves, and they scatter short blue waves several times more than long red ones, so blue light reaches your eyes from every part of the sky. At sunset, sunlight crosses far more air, the blue is scattered away on the way, and the light that is left is orange and red.

A diagram: compared with Earth, the air is drawn many times thicker than it really is, and the light particles move slowly so you can follow them. Only five colors are shown. The numbers and the colors in the small window are calculated for clean air, counting each bounce once; real skies also have dust, smoke, and clouds, which can make sunsets redder or duller.

Unit 9: Why Is the Sky Blue?

Look up on a clear day in Changhua, and the sky is bright blue. Wait until evening, stand on the coast facing the Taiwan Strait, and the setting Sun glows orange and red. But sunlight looks white, and the air looks clear. So where does the blue come from, and why does the Sun change color at the end of the day?

In 1672, Isaac Newton reported that a glass prism splits white sunlight into a rainbow of colors. White light is really every color mixed together. Each color is a light wave with its own length: red waves are the longest we can see, and blue and violet waves are the shortest. In 1859, John Tyndall showed that tiny particles scatter blue light more than red, and in 1871, Lord Rayleigh worked out the exact rule.

Here is Rayleigh's rule. Air molecules are far smaller than light waves. When sunlight hits them, they scatter a little of it in every direction, and the shorter the wave, the more it is scattered. Blue light is scattered several times more than red light. As sunlight crosses the air, blue light bounces off in all directions, so wherever you look in the sky, blue light is coming toward your eyes.

Violet waves are even shorter, so why isn't the sky violet? Sunlight has less violet than blue to begin with, some violet is absorbed high in the air, and our eyes are less sensitive to violet. The mix that reaches us looks sky blue. Clouds are different. Their water droplets are much bigger than light waves, so they scatter all colors about equally, and clouds look white or gray.

At sunset, sunlight arrives almost sideways. Instead of crossing the air straight down, it travels through up to about 38 times as much air. Along that long path, almost all the blue is scattered away, and mostly orange and red light reaches you. Dust and smoke can make sunsets even redder. This reddened light even reaches the Moon during a total lunar eclipse and turns it a coppery red, as you learned in the astronomy series.

Without air, there would be no blue sky. On the Moon, which has almost no air, the sky is black even in the daytime. On Mars, the thin air is full of fine dust, so the daytime sky looks orange or reddish, and the sky around the setting Sun turns blue-gray, the opposite of Earth. Next time you see a blue sky or a red sunset, remember that you are seeing sunlight bounce off the air above you.

Questions ·

Why does the air scatter blue light more than red light?

Air molecules are much smaller than light waves, and the shorter the wave, the more it is scattered. Blue waves are shorter than red waves.

If violet light is scattered even more, why isn't the sky violet?

Sunlight has less violet than blue, some violet is absorbed high in the air, and our eyes are less sensitive to violet.

Why does the Sun look orange or red at sunset?

At sunset, sunlight crosses up to about 38 times as much air, so almost all the blue is scattered away before it reaches you, leaving mostly orange and red.

Before you try anything

  • Never look straight at the Sun, even at sunrise or sunset. It can permanently damage your eyes.
  • Never look at the Sun through binoculars, a telescope, or a camera viewfinder.
  • In the glass activity, use only a flashlight, and do not stare into it. Never shine a laser pointer at anyone's eyes.
  • Watch sunsets from a safe place with an adult, away from roads, cliffs, and the edge of the water.
  • On sunny days, wear a hat and sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.

Classroom Activity 1 ·

Make a Sunset in a Glass

You need ·

  • A tall clear glass or jar of water
  • Milk and a teaspoon
  • A bright white flashlight (a phone flashlight works)
  • A white wall or a sheet of white paper

Steps · 步驟

  1. In a dark room, shine the flashlight through the side of the glass of plain water onto the white paper. What color is the spot of light?
  2. Stir in half a teaspoon of milk. Look at the glass from the side: does the water glow a little blue?
  3. Now look at the spot on the paper. It turns yellow or orange, like the setting Sun.
  4. Add a little more milk at a time. The spot grows redder, just as a longer path through the air makes the Sun redder.

The tiny fat drops in milk scatter blue light out of the beam, just as air does. If the colors are hard to see, use less milk and a brighter flashlight.

Classroom Activity 2 ·

Keep a Sky Color Diary

You need ·

  • Colored pencils or paint color cards

Steps · 步驟

  1. Choose one safe spot. At midday, in the late afternoon, and near sunset, color what the sky looks like straight overhead and near the horizon. Always face away from the Sun.
  2. Write down the weather each time: clear, hazy, or cloudy.
  3. Compare your pages. When is the sky overhead the deepest blue? When is the horizon palest or most orange?
  4. Compare your diary with the small window in the 3D model at the same Sun heights.
