Five identical trees stand at five distances. Switch four cues on and off, overlap, size, position, and air, and watch a flat row of trees turn into a deep landscape.
A painter has four simple cues for distance besides perspective lines. Near things cover far things. Far things are drawn smaller. On the ground, far things sit higher up the picture, toward the horizon. And far things look paler and bluer, because of the air between. Use none of them and the picture is flat. Use all four and it looks deep.

On the right is the world: five trees of the same size and color, standing 5, 8, 12, 18, and 27 meters from an eye. On the left is a picture of them. The four switches are the painter's choices. Turn a cue off and the picture stops using it, though the world stays the same. Every tree carries a number, 1 for the nearest, and the table gives the distance, drawn size, and lightness of each one.

Reading ·
Draw five trees in a row, all the same size, all the same green, all standing on one line. Your picture is flat. Nothing in it says which tree is close and which is far. Yet a landscape painter can make you feel that one hill is a short walk away and another is a day's journey. Painters do it with a small set of cues, and you already read every one of them without thinking.
The first cue is overlap. If one tree hides part of another, the hidden one must be behind. Overlap tells you the order of things, though it cannot tell you how far apart they are. The second cue is size. When you know two trees are about the same size, the one that looks smaller seems farther away. This is the rule you met in Lesson 5: twice as far, half as tall.
The third cue is position on the picture. Look at a field or a floor. The ground near your feet is at the bottom of your view, and the ground far away is higher up, close to the horizon. So a tree whose foot is drawn higher on the picture looks farther off. This works for things on the ground, below your eye level. Clouds above you do the opposite.
The fourth cue is the air itself. Air scatters sunlight, and that scattered light is added to everything you see through it. The more air lies between you and a hill, the paler the hill looks, and the less contrast it has. Scattered sky light usually has more blue in it, so far hills usually look bluish. Artists call this aerial perspective, or atmospheric perspective.
Leonardo da Vinci wrote about it in his notebooks about five hundred years ago. He called it aerial perspective, because, he said, the atmosphere lets us tell how far away different buildings are. His advice to painters was plain. Paint the nearest building in its real color, and make the more distant ones less defined and bluer.
Chinese landscape painters thought about distance too. In the eleventh century the painter Guo Xi described three kinds of distance in a mountain scene: looking up from the foot of a mountain to its peak, looking from the front of a mountain to what lies behind, and looking from a near mountain across to far ones. All these painters, east and west, were solving the same puzzle. The paper is flat, and the world is not.

All four cues start switched off: five trees in a flat row. Then overlap, size, position, and air come on one after another.
Only the air cue is on. The trees are the same size and stand on one line, yet the pale ones already look farther away.
Seen from the side, the five trees are thin slices set one behind another, like a paper theater. From above you can read their real distances.
Look at the world from the eye, through the picture frame. Overlap, size, and position are already there before the painter does anything.

Three trees, A, B, and C, each with a slider. Place 1 is the nearest and place 5 is the farthest. Move the trees to finish three small tasks. As a tree goes back, watch all four cues change together: it shrinks, rises, fades, and slips behind the others.
1 = nearest · 最近5 = farthest · 最遠
When two trees are at the same distance, they are drawn the same size and the same color, and the picture cannot tell you which is in front.

In his notebooks Leonardo da Vinci wrote: “There is another kind of perspective which I call Aerial Perspective, because by the atmosphere we are able to distinguish the variations in distance of different buildings.” He also asked why far mountains look blue. He argued that the air itself is not blue: it takes on that color, he wrote, from particles of moisture that catch the rays of the sun.
Northern Song · 北宋
The painter Guo Xi wrote that a mountain has three distances. Looking up from the foot to the peak is high distance. Looking from the front of the mountain to what lies behind is deep distance. Looking from a near mountain to far ones is level distance. A Taiwanese education encyclopedia notes that one Chinese landscape often holds all three at once, because it does not keep to a single viewpoint.
Ancient Egypt ·
Size has not always stood for distance. In the art of ancient Egypt, people of higher status were sometimes drawn larger than those of lower status. This is called hierarchical proportion. Egyptian artists did use simple overlapping to show which figure was nearer. A cue is a habit shared by the artist and the viewer, and different times have used the same cue for different jobs.
Science · 科學
Molecules of air, and larger particles such as water vapor and smoke, scatter light. This scattered sky light is laid like a thin veil over the light coming from a distant hill, and it lowers the hill's contrast. Sky light usually has more short-wavelength light in it, which is also why the sky looks blue, so distant things usually look bluish. On a hazy day the veil is thicker, and the hills fade sooner.

Myth vs. Fact ·
Far hills look blue because air is blue.
Air scatters sunlight, and the scattered light, which usually has more blue in it, is added between you and the hills. At sunrise or sunset the added light can be reddish. Leonardo already argued that the air itself is not blue.
Anything drawn higher on the picture is farther away.
That holds for things on the ground, below your eye level: far ground is nearer the horizon. Above your eye level it is reversed. A far cloud sits lower than a near one, and it too is nearer the horizon.
A bigger figure in a picture is always a nearer one.
Only when the artist is using size for distance. In ancient Egyptian art, a larger figure was often a more important person. You have to know which habit the picture follows.
Without perspective lines, a picture cannot look deep.
Overlap, size, position, and air need no ruler and no vanishing point. Landscapes with no straight lines at all can look very deep. The model on this page has no perspective lines in it.

You may find that your far layers are gray or brownish and hardly blue at all. That is a real result. The color of the haze depends on the weather, on what is in the air, and on where the Sun is. Write down what you see, and do not write what the model says you should see.
