Circle or ball?
First the ball is drawn with no shading at all: a flat gray circle. Then the shading comes back, and the circle swells into a ball.

Move one lamp around a ball and watch the light side, the dark side, and the shadow follow it. Then take the shading away and see the ball turn back into a flat circle.
An outline can only tell you that a shape is a circle. Shading tells you that it is a ball. The surface is lightest where it faces the lamp and grows darker as it turns away, and the shadow falls on the side away from the lamp. Light, shade, and shadow all follow the light source.

Drag the lamp, or use the two sliders, to move it around the ball and up and down. The labels name the parts of the light and shade. Point at any spot on the ball to read how light it is. Then press Flat circle to take all the shading away, or Pencil steps to sort the grays into a few steps the way you would with a pencil.

The grays are screen values from 0 (black) to 255 (white). L* is a measure of lightness from 0 to 100. The ball and the table are drawn straight from the numbers, with no other lighting added.

Reading ·
Draw a circle on a sheet of paper. It could be a coin, a plate, or a hole. Nothing in the outline tells you which. Now make one side of the circle light and let it grow darker little by little toward the other side, and add a dark patch on the ground beside it. Suddenly the circle is a ball. The outline did not change. What you added is shading, and shading is how a flat drawing shows that a thing is round.
Shading copies what light does. Put a ball on a table and switch on one lamp. The part of the ball that faces the lamp gets the most light. As the surface curves away, the same light is spread over more of it, so it looks darker. Where the surface turns its back on the lamp, no direct light arrives at all. Every gray on the ball depends on one thing: how squarely that spot faces the light.
Artists have names for the parts. The highlight is the brightest spot, where a shiny surface sends the lamp's light straight to your eye. The light side shades into the halftone, the middle grays. Then comes the core shadow, a soft dark band that begins where the direct light ends. Beyond it the shadow side is often a little lighter again. That is reflected light, which bounces up from the table onto the ball.
The ball also blocks light from reaching the table, and that makes a cast shadow. A cast shadow always points away from the lamp. Raise the lamp and the shadow gets shorter. Lower the lamp and it stretches out, the way your own shadow does late in the afternoon. A small lamp gives a shadow with a crisp edge. The wider the light source, the more blurred the shadow becomes.
You do not need hundreds of grays to draw a ball. How light or dark a color is, is called its value, and a value scale is a row of even steps from white to black. In the Munsell system, value runs from 0 for black to 10 for white. In 1907 the teacher Denman Ross described a scale of nine values. With only five steps of pencil gray, placed in the right places, a circle already looks round.
Painters have used light and shade this way for centuries. The Italian word chiaroscuro means light-dark, and it describes clear contrasts of tone that suggest the volume of the things in a painting. Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio are famous for it. You can see the same thing in the night sky. The Sun always lights half of the Moon, like one lamp shining on one ball, and what we call the phases are our changing view of that sunlit half.
Questions ·
A drawn circle and a drawn ball have the same outline. What makes one of them look round?
You see a ball whose shadow is very long and points to the right. Where is the lamp?
Why is the shadow side of a ball on a white table usually not completely black?

Quick Check ·
1. Which part of a ball is lightest?
2. Which way does a cast shadow point?
3. What happens to the shadow on the table when the lamp is lowered?
4. What is reflected light?
5. What does “value” mean in art?
Try It in the Model ·
Then try it yourself. Where must the lamp be for the shadow to hide completely behind the ball? Where is it when the ball looks flattest?
First the ball is drawn with no shading at all: a flat gray circle. Then the shading comes back, and the circle swells into a ball.
The lamp moves from the left side to the right. The light side, the dark band, and the shadow on the table all swing around with it.
With the lamp high, the shadow is a short patch under the ball. As the lamp comes down, the shadow stretches far across the table.
The same light is sorted into seven steps of gray, then five, then three. Even with three, you still read the shape as a ball.

Five gray squares are out of order. Click one square and then another to trade their places, until the lightest is on the left and the darkest on the right. Then press Check. There are three rounds, and in each round the grays are closer together.
After you finish a round, each square shows its L*, a number for lightness from 0 (black) to 100 (white). Remember Lesson 2: a gray can look lighter or darker depending on what is beside it, so the last round is harder than it sounds.

A Word from Italy ·
Chiaroscuro is an Italian term that literally means light-dark. The National Gallery in London uses it for clear contrasts of tone that suggest the volume and modeling of the things in a painting, and names Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio as artists famed for it. In Caravaggio's late paintings, faces and hands are lit against a setting that is mostly dark. That stronger kind has its own name, tenebrism.
Leonardo · 達文西
Look at the edge of the ball in the model. There is no line around it. One gray simply meets another. Leonardo da Vinci advised painting without lines. The soft, smoky way he blurred his contours is called sfumato: figures emerge from a dark background through gradual changes of tone, with no harsh outlines.
In the Sky · 天上
The Sun always lights half of the Moon while the other half stays dark. The line between lunar day and night is called the terminator, and long shadows there make craters and mountains easy to see. The dark part of a crescent Moon is sometimes faintly visible too. NASA calls that earthshine: sunlight that reflects off the Earth onto the Moon. It is the same reflected light you see under the ball.

How many steps should a value scale have? In A Theory of Pure Design, published in 1907, the American teacher Denman Ross set out a scale of nine neutral values, with white the highest and black the lowest. Albert Munsell's system, from the same years, numbers value from 0 for black to 10 for white. The number of steps is a choice. Seeing the steps clearly is the skill.

Myth vs. Fact ·
To make a drawing look real, you need a strong, dark outline.
An outline shows only the shape of the edge. A ball looks round because of its shading and its cast shadow. Real objects have no line around them at all.
The darkest part of a ball is the part farthest from the lamp.
The darkest part is often a band just past the edge of the direct light, called the core shadow. Farther around, reflected light from the table makes the surface a little lighter again.
A shadow is solid black.
A shadow is a place that direct light does not reach. Light reflected from other surfaces usually still gets in, and when the light source is wide, the edge of the shadow is blurred.
Pencil lead is made of lead.
Pencil lead is not lead. Most pencil cores are made of graphite powder mixed with clay. That is still no reason to put a pencil in your mouth.

Steps · 步驟
Your shadow will not match the model exactly. The model treats the lamp as very far away, and a real lamp is close and has some width, so its shadow spreads and its edge is soft. A matte ball may have no bright highlight at all. Finding these differences is the point.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Squint at the ball until the small details blur. Squinting makes the big areas of light and dark easier to sort. If your drawing looks flat, the usual reason is that the darkest gray is not dark enough.
