Reading Your Own Yin-Yang Balance
Four everyday signs — temperature, energy, thirst, sleep — and why only the pattern over time matters.

Unit 9: Reading Your Own Yin-Yang Balance
Chinese medicine offers a simple, everyday way to notice which direction a person's yin and yang currently lean, long before anything becomes a medical problem. The signs are ordinary: temperature preference, energy through the day, thirst, and sleep. A person leaning toward yang excess or yin deficiency tends to run warm, prefer cold drinks, feel most energetic in the afternoon or evening, and sleep lightly or restlessly. A person leaning toward yang deficiency tends to run cold, especially in the hands and feet, prefer warm drinks, feel most sluggish in the morning, and sleep heavily but wake up unrefreshed.
None of these signs mean anything on their own. A single cold morning does not make someone "yang deficient," any more than one sleepless night makes someone "yin deficient." What matters is a pattern that holds steady over weeks, not an isolated day. This is also why Chinese medicine asks so many small, seemingly unrelated questions in a consultation — thirst, sleep, sweating, appetite, mood — because no single answer is diagnostic by itself. The pattern across all of them is.
The purpose of noticing these patterns in daily life is not to self-treat. It is to know your own baseline well enough to notice when something changes, and to describe that change clearly to a doctor. "I've been sleeping restlessly and craving cold drinks for the last month" is a far more useful sentence to bring into a clinic than "I don't feel like myself."

1. According to the passage, which of these is one of the four everyday signs used to notice yin-yang tendencies?
2. Why does the passage say a single sleepless night doesn't make someone "yin deficient"?
3. According to the passage, what is the real purpose of noticing your own daily patterns?
These are everyday observations, not a diagnostic checklist. A pattern worth noting is a reason to describe it clearly to a licensed doctor — not to self-treat based on this reading.
