Yang Deficiency and Yin Excess: Same Cold, Different Cause
This unit already told the story for heat — the same logic, run in reverse, explains two very different reasons a person might feel cold.
這個單元已經講過熱的那個版本——同一套邏輯反過來運行,解釋了一個人怕冷可能有的兩種截然不同的原因。
Unit 60: Yang Deficiency and Yin Excess: Same Cold, Different Cause
An earlier lesson in this unit distinguished excess heat from deficient heat — one caused by too much yang, the other by too little yin. Cold works the same way, in reverse, and deserves the same careful separation. Yang deficiency is a shortage: yang itself has grown too weak to warm the body properly, the way a fire that's been allowed to die down produces less heat than before. This kind of cold tends to be constant, accompanied by visibly pale skin, a preference for warm drinks and warm weather, and a general low energy that matches the qi deficiency covered earlier in this course.
Yin excess works by addition rather than subtraction: yin itself — the cooling, condensing substance — has become too abundant, overwhelming yang's warming function even though yang itself may be perfectly adequate. This kind of cold tends to feel heavier and more localized, often described as an oppressive coldness in a specific area, sometimes with visible fluid retention or swelling, since excess yin also tends to bring an excess of the fluid it's associated with.
The response, once again, runs in opposite directions. Yang deficiency calls for warming and strengthening yang directly, the way a fire needs more fuel. Yin excess calls for draining or transforming the excess substance itself, the way a flooded room needs drainage rather than a stronger heater. Confusing the two — warming a room that's actually flooded, or trying to drain a room that's simply lost its heat source — repeats the same error this unit already warned against for heat, just with the temperature running the other way.

1. According to the passage, what causes yang deficiency?
2. According to the passage, what symptom is specifically associated with yin excess rather than yang deficiency?
3. According to the last paragraph, what is the correct response to yin excess, according to the passage?
This lesson explains a diagnostic distinction, not a way to self-treat. Telling yang deficiency from yin excess requires a licensed practitioner's examination, not just a feeling of cold.
這是診斷區分的說明,不是自我治療的方法;分辨陽虛與陰盛需要合格醫師的診察,不能只靠怕冷的感覺自行判斷。
