This course has treated joy as the healthiest of the emotions by default. This lesson explains the traditional exception.
這門課到目前為止,預設把喜當成七情裡最健康的一種。這一課要講的是傳統上的一個例外。
Unit 116: Why Too Much Excitement Can Backfire
This unit's lessons on anger and fear have both described an emotion with a clearly disruptive directional effect on qi. Joy is traditionally treated differently at first: "joy relaxes qi," meaning moderate joy is described as slowing and relaxing qi's movement, associated with an easy, unforced kind of relaxation rather than the sharp surges anger and fear are said to produce — which is part of why joy is generally treated as the most benign of the seven emotions in this framework.
The exception is what happens at the extreme: joy taken past a moderate, easy relaxation into sudden, overwhelming excitement is traditionally described as "joy injures the heart," scattering heart qi so completely that it can no longer hold itself together in an organized way. The traditional image most often used to illustrate this is a moment of overwhelming, sudden good news producing a scattered, unfocused, almost dazed state rather than simple happiness — qi relaxed so far past its normal tension that it loses its shape entirely.
This exception matters because it completes a pattern this unit's lessons on the seven emotions have built up piece by piece: every one of the emotions, including the one usually treated as harmless, is capable of disrupting qi if it's extreme enough, sudden enough, or sustained long enough. Chinese medicine doesn't sort emotions into a permanently safe half and a permanently risky half; it sorts extremity itself as the actual variable that matters, regardless of which of the seven emotions happens to be involved.
