Summer-Heat: The Excess That Only Exists in One Season
Every other excess this course has covered can show up any time of year. This one is defined by its season as much as by its nature.
這門課提過的其他每一種病邪都可能一年四季出現。這一種卻由季節本身來定義,程度不亞於它的性質。
Unit 72: Summer-Heat: The Excess That Only Exists in One Season
An earlier unit lesson introduced six excesses — wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, and fire — as environmental patterns capable of invading the body year-round. Chinese medicine treats one pattern differently: summer-heat, defined specifically as the excess that only exists during summer itself. Heat and fire, covered earlier, can technically show up in any season if conditions are extreme enough; summer-heat, by definition, cannot exist outside of summer at all.
This isn't just a naming convention — summer-heat is described as combining two things at once in a way ordinary heat doesn't: intense temperature and, because summer's heat is so often paired with dampness, a tendency to injure fluids and qi simultaneously through heavy sweating. The classic symptom picture reflects both halves — high fever and thirst from the heat component, alongside fatigue and a heavy, sluggish feeling from the fluid and qi loss, a combination this course's earlier lesson on summer's own seasonal advice already anticipated.
Recognizing summer-heat as its own category, distinct from ordinary heat, matters because the response has to address both halves at once — cooling the heat down while also replenishing what the sweating has drained, rather than treating it as a simple case of "too much heat" and stopping there. It's a small, specific example of a larger pattern this course keeps returning to: naming a condition precisely enough to reveal what a more general label would have missed.

2. According to the passage, what does the classic symptom picture of summer-heat include?
3. According to the last paragraph, why must summer-heat be treated differently from simple "too much heat"?
This lesson explains a seasonal pathogen category, not a treatment guide. Heat exhaustion or dehydration symptoms need immediate medical attention, not this reading.
