Why Fear Makes You Lose Control
This unit has already connected anger to the liver and worry to the spleen. This lesson covers what fear is traditionally said to do to qi.
這個單元已經把怒連結到肝、把思連結到脾。這一課要講的是恐傳統上被說成對氣做了什麼。
Unit 93: Why Fear Makes You Lose Control
This unit's lesson on the seven emotions listed fear as one of the seven, alongside a general principle that each emotion moves qi in its own characteristic direction. Chinese medicine specifies fear's direction precisely: "fear makes qi descend," meaning intense fear is traditionally described as driving qi sharply downward, away from its normal, more evenly distributed circulation.
This downward movement is offered as the traditional explanation for a very specific, almost universally recognized physical response: the sudden loss of bladder or bowel control that can accompany extreme fright. Rather than treating this as an unrelated, purely mechanical reflex, the framework reads it as a direct, visible consequence of qi being driven down and out of its normal holding pattern — the same descending qi that, in smaller doses, shows up as the more familiar sensation of a stomach "dropping" at a sudden scare.
The kidney is traditionally linked to this pattern because the kidney sits at the body's lower region and is traditionally responsible for a function this course's organs unit described as governing water and reception of qi — holding qi and fluids in their proper place. A sharp downward surge driven by fear is traditionally read as overwhelming that holding function, at least momentarily, which is also why prolonged or chronic fear, as distinct from a single startling moment, is traditionally associated with longer-term kidney-related weakness rather than a one-time event.

This lesson explains a conceptual mechanism, not a diagnosis. Persistent anxiety or loss of bladder or bowel control should be evaluated by a licensed doctor.
