The Equinoxes and Solstices: The Four Pivot Points of the Year
Of the twenty-four solar terms this course already introduced, four carry more weight than the rest — the exact turning points of the year.
在這門課已經介紹過的二十四節氣裡,有四個比其他的更有份量——一年當中確切的轉折點。
Unit 76: The Equinoxes and Solstices: The Four Pivot Points of the Year
An earlier unit lesson introduced the twenty-four solar terms as a finer calendar than the four Western seasons, each marking a specific fifteen-day shift. Within those twenty-four, four hold special weight: the spring and autumn equinoxes, when day and night are of equal length, and the summer and winter solstices, marking the year's longest and shortest days. These four aren't just four terms among twenty-four — they're the exact pivot points the entire yearly cycle turns on.
Each of the four marks a moment of maximum or balanced yin-yang, tying directly back to concepts already covered in this course. The winter solstice marks yin at its absolute peak, the single darkest point of the year, and is traditionally treated as the moment yang begins its slow return — the seed of the coming spring planted at winter's deepest point. The summer solstice marks the mirror image, yang at its peak just as it's about to begin receding. The two equinoxes mark the two moments yin and yang sit in exact, momentary balance, before tipping toward one direction or the other.
Understanding these four pivot points explains why they carry outsized cultural and medical weight compared to an ordinary solar term: they aren't just fifteen-day markers, but the four moments when the yin-yang cycle this course has described throughout — in a single day, a single year, and now the wider structure of the calendar itself — actually changes direction. Everything this course has said about a season's advice applying to a stretch of weeks turns out to hinge on these four precise hinge-points holding the whole structure together.
