Why Pressing a Sore Spot Sometimes Helps
Not every useful point has a name or a fixed location — some are found simply by pressing until something hurts.
不是每個有用的點都有名字或固定位置——有些只是靠按壓,按到痛為止就找到了。
Unit 46: Why Pressing a Sore Spot Sometimes Helps
An earlier lesson in this unit described acupuncture points as fixed, mapped locations along the twelve meridians, each with its own name and traditional set of effects. Chinese medicine also recognizes a second, much less formal category: points with no fixed location at all, found simply by pressing around an area until a person reacts to a tender spot. These are called "ashi points," a name that comes from the sound a person makes when the press finds the right place — roughly, "ah, yes, that's it."
An ashi point isn't marked on any traditional chart, doesn't have a name of its own, and can appear in a completely different spot from one person to the next, or even from one week to the next in the same person. What makes it worth treating isn't its location on a map — it's the local tenderness itself, read as a sign that qi and blood have become stuck in that specific spot, regardless of which meridian happens to run nearby.
This category matters for understanding acupuncture as a living practice rather than a fixed lookup table. Alongside points chosen because a chart says they affect a particular organ, a practitioner is also always working with what the body is showing right now, in real time, at that specific visit — the fixed map and the moment-to-moment finding work together rather than one replacing the other.
