Your phone warms up when you play a game, and a laptop sometimes roars with its fan. Where does the heat come from? In a 3D model, give a chip more work, then add a heat sink and a fan, and watch its temperature and speed. Then use two sliders to see why a little less voltage saves a lot of power.
A chip turns the electrical energy it uses into heat. Every time a transistor switches, a tiny bit of energy is spent, and a chip has billions of transistors switching billions of times a second. The harder the chip works, the more heat it makes. That heat must be carried away, or the chip protects itself by slowing down.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. First choose how hard the chip is working: idle, playing a video, or running a game. Then choose how it is cooled: nothing at all, a heat sink, or a heat sink with a fan. The chip changes color as it warms up, and the orange dots show heat leaving. Watch what happens to the speed when the chip gets too hot.

A teaching model, not a real chip. The temperatures, the 95°C limit, the three workloads, and the three cooling strengths are example numbers chosen to show the idea; real chips have their own limits, which the maker lists in the datasheet. Heat is invisible, so the orange dots are only a picture of it, and the model runs faster than real time.

Reading ·
Play a game on a phone for a while, and the back of the phone grows warm. Open many programs on a laptop, and a fan inside begins to spin loudly. Nothing is burning, and nothing is broken. The heat comes from the chip, and making heat is a normal part of a chip's work.
Remember that a chip is made of transistors, which are tiny switches. Each time a switch turns on or off, a little electric charge has to move, and moving it takes a little energy. That energy does not disappear. It turns into heat. One switch makes almost no heat at all, but a chip has billions of switches, and they can switch billions of times every second.
So the harder a chip works, the hotter it gets. When your phone is only showing the clock, few transistors are switching, and the chip stays cool. When you play a game, the chip must draw a new picture many times a second. Many more transistors switch, the chip uses more power, and it makes more heat.
The heat has to go somewhere. In a computer, a piece of metal called a heat sink sits on top of the chip. It has many thin fins, so it has a very large surface that touches the air. Heat moves from the chip into the metal and from the metal into the air. A fan then blows the warm air away so that cooler air can take its place.
A phone has no room for a fan, so it spreads the heat through its body and lets it leave from the surface. That is why you feel the warmth in your hand. If a chip still gets too hot, it protects itself: it slows down so that it makes less heat. You may notice a game becoming less smooth. If slowing down is not enough, the device shuts itself off.
Engineers work hard to make chips that waste less energy. The best trick is lowering the voltage, because a small drop in voltage saves a lot of power. Chips also rest whenever they can, which makes a battery last longer. For the biggest computers, air is not enough, and some are cooled with liquid instead. A cooler chip is a faster and longer-lasting chip.

Voltage and Speed ·
The power a chip spends on switching depends on its voltage and on how many times it switches each second. Voltage counts twice: the power goes with voltage times voltage. Move the sliders and see.
Or try one of these · 或試試這幾種
This follows the rule for switching power: power = C × V² × f, where V is the voltage and f is how often the transistors switch. The three settings are examples, not real products. A real chip also loses some power through small leakage currents, which this calculator leaves out.

Stories About Heat ·
Heat has shaped how computers are built.
1974
In 1974 Robert Dennard and his coworkers wrote a paper about shrinking transistors. It showed that when transistors get smaller, the voltage and current can shrink too, so each area of the chip uses about the same power as before. Chips could hold more and more transistors without growing hotter.
2005
The rule stopped working around 2005. Chips had become too difficult to keep cool, and engineers call this the power wall. Clock speeds could no longer climb quickly. Most makers turned to another idea instead: putting several processor cores on one chip.
Cray-2
The Cray-2 supercomputer was so hard to cool that its designer filled the whole machine with a liquid called Fluorinert. The liquid does not disturb electronic parts. It soaked up the heat and was then pumped out to be cooled with chilled water.
Phones · 手機
In phones and tablets the parts are packed tightly together, with little or no active cooling, and your hand adds warmth too. So phones often manage their temperature by throttling: the chip slows down for a while until it cools.
