Inside almost every one of your cells there is a set of instructions for building you. It is written with only four letters. In a 3D model, unzip a piece of DNA and watch each half build itself a new partner, until one molecule has become two that match. Then change a single letter and see where the change goes. Last, write a code of your own and count how many different codes four letters can make.
DNA is a very long molecule shaped like a twisted ladder. Each rung of the ladder is a pair of chemical letters, and there are only four letters: A, T, C, and G. A always pairs with T, and C always pairs with G. The order of the letters is the message. Because of the pairing rule, a cell can pull the ladder apart and rebuild both halves, so every new cell gets its own full copy.
A、T、C、G。A 一定配 T,C 一定配 G。

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. Press Pause, and then move the slider slowly from 0 to 100. The ladder opens from the top like a zipper, and new letters join each half. Look at which letter joins which. Then tap any letter in the row under the slider to change it, and copy the ladder again. Do both copies carry your change?

A teaching model. The twelve letters are an example and are not taken from a real gene. Real DNA has no colors, and its letters are groups of atoms, not printed letters. The ladder turns once in about ten rungs, as real DNA does, but the two sides are drawn evenly spaced to keep the picture simple. In a cell, copying is done by many helper molecules that the model does not show, and one set of human DNA has about 3.1 billion rungs, not twelve.

Reading ·
Identical twins can look so much alike that even their friends mix them up. Why? Both of them grew from the same single cell, so both carry almost exactly the same set of instructions. Those instructions are written in a molecule called DNA.
DNA is very long and very thin, and it is shaped like a ladder that has been twisted. Scientists call this shape a double helix. The two sides of the ladder are long strands. The rungs between them are made of four small chemical parts, which we call by their first letters: A, T, C, and G.
The letters follow one simple rule. A always pairs with T, and C always pairs with G. So each rung is a pair, and if you know the letters along one side of the ladder, you can work out the letters along the other side.
This rule is what lets a cell copy its DNA. Before a cell divides, the ladder unzips down the middle. Each loose letter picks up a new partner, A with T and C with G, until there are two ladders where there was one. They read the same, and each has one old strand and one new strand.
The order of the letters is the message. A stretch of DNA that carries the instructions for one job is called a gene. People have about 19,000 to 20,000 genes that tell cells how to build proteins. One full set of human DNA has about 3.1 billion pairs of letters, and it is packed into 23 pairs of bundles called chromosomes.
Now and then a letter is changed. This is called a mutation. Many mutations make no difference at all, and some change how a living thing is built. Every living thing we know, from a mushroom to an orchid to you, writes its instructions with the same four letters. Only the order is different.

1869
A young Swiss doctor named Friedrich Miescher wanted to know what cells are made of. He collected used bandages from a hospital, because the pus on them was full of cells. In the nuclei of those cells he found a substance that nobody had described before. He called it nuclein. Today we call it DNA.

1952–1953
On May 2, 1952, at King's College London, Raymond Gosling took an X-ray picture of DNA while working under Rosalind Franklin. It is known as Photo 51, and it became an important piece of evidence for the shape of DNA. On April 25, 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published the double helix in the journal Nature. Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins shared a Nobel Prize in 1962. Franklin had died in 1958.
1990–2022
In 1990, scientists in many countries began the Human Genome Project. Their aim was to read every letter of human DNA. The project was declared complete on April 14, 2003, with about 92 percent of the letters read. The parts that were hardest to read took much longer. A complete sequence with no gaps was reported in 2022.
