Living Things · Unit 1 · Lesson 1 ·
A whale, a mushroom, a blade of grass, and you are all built from the same kind of tiny living block. It is called a cell. In a 3D model, cut one open and tap each part to see what it does. Then switch to a plant cell and find the three things it has that yours do not. Last, learn to tell what kind of cell you are looking at.
Every living thing is made of cells. A cell is a tiny bag of jelly with a thin skin around it. Inside, a control center holds the instructions, and small power stations turn food into energy. Plant cells have three extra things: a stiff wall, green parts that make food from sunlight, and a big bag of water. Some living things are a single cell. You are about thirty trillion of them, working together.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. The cell has been cut open so you can see inside. Tap a part in the list. It lights up in the model, and you can read what it does. When you have tried them all, choose Plant cell. Which parts are new? Which part takes up most of the room?

A teaching model. Real cells are not these colors. Most of a cell is almost clear, and scientists add dyes to see the parts. Real cells also come in many shapes, and they hold other parts that this model leaves out to keep it simple. The parts are not drawn to scale: mitochondria and chloroplasts are drawn larger than they should be so that you can see them.

Reading ·
Look closely at the back of your hand. It seems smooth and solid. But if you could look much, much closer, you would find that your skin is built of tiny separate pieces, packed together like bricks in a wall. Each piece is alive. Each one is called a cell.
Cells were first seen in 1665. An English scientist named Robert Hooke looked at a thin slice of cork through a microscope and saw rows of little empty boxes. They reminded him of the small rooms that monks lived in, which were called cells, so that is the name he gave them. About 170 years later, scientists came to understand that every plant and every animal is made of cells.
A cell is like a very small bag. Its skin is called the cell membrane, and it decides what may come in and what may go out. The bag is filled with a watery jelly. Floating in the jelly is the nucleus, which keeps the cell's instructions. There are also many tiny power stations, called mitochondria, which turn food into energy that the cell can use.
Plant cells have all of these, and three things more. Around the membrane there is a stiff wall, which gives the plant its strength. Inside there are green chloroplasts, which make food from sunlight. And in the middle there is a large bag of water, called a vacuole, which keeps the cell firm.
Some living things are just one cell, alone. A drop of pond water is full of them. Larger living things are made of a great many cells. An adult human body has about thirty trillion. They are not all alike. Nerve cells, muscle cells, skin cells, and blood cells each have a different shape because each has a different job.
Where do new cells come from? Always from other cells. A cell grows, copies its instructions, and divides into two. That is how you grew from a single cell into the person you are, and it is how your skin mends itself after a cut. Every cell alive today came from a cell that lived before it.

1665
Robert Hooke built his own microscope and looked at everything he could find: a flea, a snowflake, the point of a needle. In a thin slice of cork he saw rows of tiny boxes and called them cells. What he saw were not living cells. Cork is dead bark, and the boxes were the empty walls that the cells had left behind.
Delft ·
At about the same time, a cloth seller in the Netherlands named Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was grinding tiny lenses of his own. Through them he saw things that nobody had seen before: living creatures swimming in a drop of water. He called them little animals. He was the first person to see living things made of a single cell.
Rule · 規則
By the middle of the 1800s, scientists had agreed on a few simple statements. All living things are made of cells. The cell is the smallest unit of life. And every cell comes from a cell that lived before it. Together these are called cell theory, and nobody has found a living thing that breaks them.
Your body ·
Your red blood cells break one of the rules in this lesson. When they are fully grown they have no nucleus at all. They throw it out to make more room for carrying oxygen. And although most cells are far too small to see, a human egg cell is one of the largest cells in the body, just big enough to see without a microscope.
