Three things your body does without asking you. See the real diaphragm jump in 3D, step through a sneeze in slow motion, and count your blinks.
Some jobs are too important to wait for you to decide. Your brainstem runs them for you, by squeezing or jolting the muscles that move air.

Choose a sneeze, a hiccup, or a yawn, and press play. Each one takes less than a few seconds in real life, so the model slows it down. Watch three things. The brainstem, at the bottom of the brain, lights up when it gives the order. The diaphragm, the dome of muscle under the lungs, pulls down to suck air in. And the gate in the throat opens and shuts. Drag the slider to move through one reflex by hand, and compare the three: which one snaps, which one blasts, and which one takes its time?

The bones, the diaphragm, the brainstem, the windpipe, and the stomach are real shapes from BodyParts3D, in their real places; the lungs, the gate in the throat, the nerve paths, and the puffs of air are our own drawing. The timing is stretched: a real hiccup is over in a fraction of a second. Real nerves take longer routes than our straight lines, and many more muscles join in than the diaphragm alone.

Reading ·
You are sitting quietly in class when, without warning: Achoo! You did not decide to sneeze. Your body did it for you. A sneeze, a hiccup, and a yawn are all things your body does on its own. Actions like these are called reflexes. Why does your body have them, and how do they work?
A reflex needs no thinking. A message travels along a nerve to the brainstem, the stalk at the bottom of your brain. The brainstem answers at once by sending orders to your muscles. It is the same part that keeps you breathing all night. Most of the muscles in this lesson are breathing muscles, and the biggest is the diaphragm, a dome of muscle under your lungs. When it pulls down, air rushes in.
A sneeze is a cleaning job. When dust or pollen tickles the inside of your nose, nerve endings there send a message to the brainstem. You take a deep breath, a gate in your throat shuts for an instant, your chest squeezes, and then the air blasts out, carrying the dust with it. One sneeze can spray about 40,000 tiny droplets, and they can fly several meters. That is why you cover a sneeze with your elbow or a tissue.
A hiccup is a mistake in the rhythm. Your diaphragm suddenly jerks down, and air rushes in. A tiny moment later, the gate in your throat slams shut, and the air hitting it makes the sound: hic! Eating too fast or drinking soda can start hiccups. Babies even hiccup before they are born. Nobody is sure what hiccups are for.
A yawn is the slow one. Your jaw opens wide, you take a long breath in, your muscles stretch, and then you breathe out fast. People once thought a yawn brings in extra oxygen, but tests do not support that idea. It may help to cool the brain or to wake you up. And yawns are catching! From about the age of six, seeing someone yawn can make you yawn too. Dogs and chimpanzees catch yawns as well.
Here is one more reflex, and you are doing it right now: blinking. Each blink spreads tears across your eye and wipes it clean, and it lasts only about a tenth of a second. A grown-up blinks about 17 times a minute. But when people read or stare at a screen, they blink only 4 or 5 times a minute, and their eyes get dry and tired. Try the blink counter below the model with a partner.

1. Which part of the brain runs these reflexes?
2. What is the diaphragm?
3. What is a sneeze for?
4. What makes the “hic” sound in a hiccup?
5. According to the reading, how often do people blink when they stare at a screen?
Four Reflexes ·
You can hold your breath or hold back a blink for a little while, but not for long. The brainstem always takes the job back.
A deep breath, a closed gate, and a blast. About 40,000 droplets fly out.
A jolt, and the gate slams shut 35 thousandths of a second later.
A slow breath in with a stretch, and a quick breath out. It spreads from person to person.
About a tenth of a second, about 17 times a minute, and far fewer when you stare at a screen.
The quiet rhythm underneath all the others. The brainstem keeps it going, awake or asleep.
Measure Yourself ·
Work with a partner. One of you is the counter, and the other just acts normally. Use the blink counter below the model. Then swap.
Myth vs. Fact ·
You cannot sneeze with your eyes open.
Your eyes usually close by reflex, but it is possible to sneeze with them open.
A yawn means you need more oxygen.
Tests do not support that idea. Scientists still do not agree on what a yawn is for.
A scare, holding your breath, or a glass of water will always stop hiccups.
No cure has been proved to work. Most hiccups simply stop on their own.
A sneeze only reaches as far as your hand.
The droplets can travel several meters. Cover your sneeze with your elbow or a tissue, and wash your hands.
A reflex goes to the brainstem and straight back to the muscles.
A cleaning job for the nose. Cover it!
The diaphragm jerks, and the gate slams shut.
About 17 blinks a minute drops to 4 or 5. Look away and blink.
In Chinese ·
When someone sneezes, English speakers say “Bless you!” It is an old habit, and people say it today simply to be polite. Chinese speakers have a playful saying instead: 一想二罵三感冒 (yī xiǎng, èr mà, sān gǎnmào). One sneeze means someone is thinking of you, two mean someone is scolding you, and three mean you have caught a cold! The words for these reflexes are fun, too. A yawn is 打呵欠 (dǎ hēqian) in Mandarin and 哈唏 (hah-hì) in Taiwanese, and both sound like a yawn. English “hiccup” and Mandarin 嗝 (gé) both copy the sound of a hiccup. Try saying them: does your mouth make the shape of the reflex?

You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: count yawns for the class as a whole, not by name. Not everyone catches yawns, and that is normal: in studies, only some of the people watching yawn. The real lesson is about method: why did we keep the purpose secret until the end?
Classroom Activity 2 ·
You need ·
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: the book rises as the diaphragm pulls down and pushes the belly out, and it sinks as the diaphragm relaxes. The sharp “ha!” is a small jolt of the same muscle, a little like half of a hiccup. Students who play wind instruments or sing may already know this muscle well.
This lesson is for learning about the body. It is not medical advice. Cover sneezes and coughs with your elbow or a tissue, and wash your hands afterward. Hiccups almost always stop on their own. If they go on for days, or if you often have trouble breathing, tell an adult and see a doctor.
