The Human Body · Lesson 28 · 人體探索 第28課
A memory is a path in your brain that gets stronger each time you use it. Follow one in 3D, watch it fade and come back, and test the best way to learn new words.
記憶是大腦裡的一條路,每用一次就更牢固。在 3D 裡跟著一條記憶走,看它變淡又回來,再親自試試哪種方法最能記住新單字。
You remember what you use. Each time you pull a memory back out, its path grows stronger, and sleep helps to save it.
用過的才記得住。每一次把記憶「拿出來」,那條路就更牢固一點;睡覺則幫忙把它存好。
3D Model · 3D 模型
Inside this head are two real hippocampi, the small gold shapes deep in the middle, and the real cerebellum and brainstem below. Press “Learn it” to store a new English word. Lines light up between the hippocampus and four places on the outside of the brain: that is the new memory. Now let a night pass, and watch it fade. Try two ways to bring it back: read it again, or cover it and recall it. Which one makes the path stronger? Keep going for a week, and watch the lines on the surface of the brain grow thick. Then switch to a skill, such as riding a bike.

List A: read again and againA 表:一直讀—
List B: cover and recallB 表:蓋起來回想—
Compare your own two scores. One try is only one try: do it again another day with new words and see whether the pattern holds.請比較自己的兩個分數。做一次只是一次:改天換一批新單字再做,看看結果是不是一樣。
The skull, the two hippocampi, the cerebellum, and the brainstem are real shapes from BodyParts3D, in their real places; the outline of the brain, the dots, and the lines are our own drawing. A real memory is not a few lines: it is a pattern across a huge number of nerve cells, and nobody can point to one. The numbers are a simple model of the pattern scientists have found (use it and it grows, leave it and it fades), not a measurement of anyone's brain.
頭骨、兩個海馬迴、小腦和腦幹是 BodyParts3D 的真實形狀,位置也是真的;大腦的外形、圓點和線條是本站自繪的示意圖。真正的記憶不是幾條線,而是分布在數量龐大的神經細胞之間的一種連結方式,沒有人能指出「就是這裡」。畫面上的數字是照科學家發現的規律(用了就變強、放著就變淡)做的簡單模型,不是任何人大腦的測量結果。

Reading · 英文閱讀
What did you have for breakfast today? What is your best friend's name? How do you ride a bike? You answered all three in a moment, but each answer was stored in a different way. Remembering feels like one simple thing. It is really several things, and you can get better at all of them.
Deep inside your brain, one on each side, lie two small curved parts called the hippocampus. Each is about five centimeters long and shaped a little like a seahorse, and that is what the name means. When something new happens, the sight is handled in one part of your brain, the sound in another, and the meaning in another. The hippocampus ties these pieces together into one memory.
A new memory is weak. More than a hundred years ago, a German scientist named Hermann Ebbinghaus memorized lists of nonsense words and then tested himself again and again. He found that forgetting is fastest at the start. Much of a new memory can be gone within days, unless you do something about it.
What can you do? Use it. Every time you pull a memory out of your own head, the path gets stronger. That is why covering the page and testing yourself works better than reading the page again. Reading again feels easy, but your brain does little work. Recalling feels hard, and the hard work is what makes the memory stay. It also helps to spread your practice out: ten minutes on each of three days beats thirty minutes in one night.
Sleep does the rest. While you sleep, your brain replays what you learned, and little by little the memory is moved out to the outer layer of the brain for long-term keeping. You learned in the lesson about sleep that a good night after studying helps you remember. Staying up late to study steals the very time your brain needs to save the work.
Riding a bike is a different kind of memory. You cannot explain it in words, and you do not forget it for years. Skills like this depend on other parts of the brain, including the cerebellum at the back, and they grow by doing, not by reading. So here is how to learn anything, including English words: use it, spread it out, sleep on it, and do it again. Try the word experiment below the model and see for yourself.

Myth vs. Fact · 常見迷思
✗ Myth · 迷思Memory works like a video camera.記憶就像錄影機。
✓ Fact · 事實A memory is rebuilt from pieces each time you recall it, so it can change, and it can be wrong.每一次回想,記憶都是用片段重新拼起來的,所以它會改變,也可能出錯。
✗ Myth · 迷思Reading your notes again and again is the best way to study.把筆記一讀再讀,是最好的讀書方法。
✓ Fact · 事實Testing yourself works better. Close the book and see what you can pull out.考自己的效果更好。把書闔上,看看自己拿得出多少。
✗ Myth · 迷思Studying all night before a test is the way to remember more.考前熬夜讀書可以記得更多。
✓ Fact · 事實Short sessions spread over several days work better, and sleep is when your brain saves what you learned.分散在幾天的短時間練習效果更好;而睡覺,正是大腦把學到的東西存檔的時候。
✗ Myth · 迷思We use only ten percent of our brains.我們只用了百分之十的大腦。
✓ Fact · 事實You use all of your brain. Different parts are busy at different times.整個大腦你都在用,只是不同的部分在不同的時候忙。

In Chinese · 中文怎麼說
Two and a half thousand years ago, Confucius gave two pieces of advice that today's memory scientists would cheer. The first is 學而時習之 (xué ér shí xí zhī): “Learn, and practice what you have learned again and again.” The second is 溫故而知新 (wēn gù ér zhī xīn): “Go back over the old, and you will understand the new.” English and Chinese also agree, wrongly, about where memories are kept. In English you learn a poem “by heart.” In Chinese you 記在心裡 (jì zài xīnlǐ), “keep it in your heart.” Both languages chose the heart. Now you know that it is really the brain.
兩千五百年前,孔子說過兩句話,今天研究記憶的科學家聽了都會鼓掌。第一句是「學而時習之」:學了之後,要時常拿出來練習。第二句是「溫故而知新」:把舊的重溫一遍,就會懂得新的。另外,英文和中文還不約而同地搞錯了記憶放在哪裡:英文說把一首詩 learn by heart(用心背下來),中文說「記在心裡」。兩種語言都選了心臟——現在你知道,其實是大腦。
Classroom Activity 1 · 課堂活動一
You need · 準備材料
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: every turn is a round of recall, so the early items are practiced the most and are remembered best. When someone gets stuck, let the group whisper a hint instead of ending the game: a hint followed by recall is still good practice. Nobody is out.
教學提示:每輪到一個人,就是一次回想,所以越前面的東西被練習得越多、記得越牢。有人卡住的時候,請讓大家小聲提示,不要讓遊戲結束——有提示之後的回想,依然是很好的練習。沒有人出局。
Classroom Activity 2 · 課堂活動二
You need · 準備材料
Steps · 步驟
Teaching tip: because each test is itself practice, most students' lines dip and then climb back, a picture of the lesson in their own handwriting. Keep the graphs private; the point is each student's own line, not a comparison between students.
教學提示:每一次測驗本身就是練習,所以大部分學生的線會先往下、再爬回來——這一課的內容,由他們自己親手畫了出來。圖表請讓學生自己保留;重點是每個人自己的那條線,不是學生之間的比較。
⚕ Health note · 健康提醒This lesson is for learning about the body. It is not medical advice, and the word experiment is not a test of how good anyone's memory is. Everybody forgets: that is how memory works. Compare your scores only with your own.本課是認識身體的教材,不是醫療建議;單字實驗也不是在測驗誰的記憶力好不好。每個人都會忘記——記憶本來就是這樣運作的。分數只和自己的比。
