Giant wings at sea turn the monsoon into electricity. Turn up the wind on a 3D offshore turbine, look inside at the generator, and see why twice the wind means eight times the power.
A wind turbine is a generator with giant wings. The wind creates lift on the blades and spins them, the spinning turns a generator, and because the power in the wind grows with the cube of its speed, twice the wind carries eight times the power.

A diagram, scaled down from the 8-megawatt turbines off Changhua: a 167-meter rotor on a tall tower over a foundation in the seabed. The rotor turns at its real speed, about 10 turns a minute at most; the wind streaks are slowed down so you can follow them. Power follows a simplified curve: starting at about 3 m/s, full power at about 12.7 m/s, and stopping above about 25 m/s.

Stand on the coast of Changhua on a winter day, and the northeast monsoon pushes so hard that you can lean into it. Far out at sea, beyond the horizon, more than a hundred giant turbines turn in that same wind. In June 2026, Taiwan finished building its 500th offshore wind turbine. How does moving air become the electricity in your home?
People have used the wind for thousands of years to sail boats, and for more than a thousand years to grind grain with windmills. A modern wind turbine does a new job: it spins a generator, just like the ones in Lesson 2. And where does wind come from? The sun heats the land, the sea, and the air unevenly. Warm air rises, cooler air rushes in to take its place, and that moving air is wind. In a way, wind power is solar power in disguise.
Turbine blades are not flat paddles. Each one is shaped like an airplane wing. As air flows over the curved blade, it creates a force called lift, which pulls the blade sideways. Lift turns the rotor around its hub. In the turbines off Changhua, the rotor turns a ring of strong magnets past coils of wire, which is the generator from Lesson 2 in a giant size. There is no gearbox at all.
These machines are enormous. Each blade on the Greater Changhua turbines is about 81 meters long, and the rotor sweeps an area about the size of three soccer fields. The rotor turns slowly, only about ten times a minute at most, but the tips of the blades travel at more than 300 kilometers an hour, faster than Taiwan's high-speed rail.
The power in the wind grows very fast with its speed. If the wind blows twice as fast, it carries eight times as much power, because the power grows with the speed multiplied by itself three times. A turbine like these starts making electricity at about 3 meters per second and reaches full power at about 12 to 13. In stronger winds, it turns its blades to spill some of the wind, and in a typhoon it turns them edge-on and stops to protect itself. No turbine can catch all of the wind's energy. The limit is about 59%, because the air has to keep moving past.
Taiwan has some of the best offshore wind in the world. One study found that 16 of the world's 20 windiest offshore sites are in the Taiwan Strait. By June 2026, Taiwan had built 500 offshore turbines, and in 2025 they made more than 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity for the first time. The wind does not always blow, and building in the sea is hard and expensive. But whenever the monsoon rushes across the strait, those giant wings turn it into power.

Four Kinds of Wind ·
Meters per second times 3.6 gives kilometers per hour. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration calls a storm a typhoon once its winds reach 17.2 meters per second, a moderate typhoon at 32.7, and a strong typhoon at 51.0.
Below about 3 meters per second there is too little power in the wind. The rotor drifts slowly and makes nothing.
The blades catch the wind well, and power climbs quickly. At half this speed, there would be only one-eighth as much.
The generator is making all it can. The turbine twists its blades a little to spill the extra wind instead of overloading.
Too dangerous to run. The blades turn edge-on to the wind, the rotor stops, and the turbine waits for the storm to pass.

Myth vs. Fact ·
Wind turbines need very strong winds to work.
Big turbines start making power at about 3 meters per second, a gentle breeze. In very strong winds they actually shut down to protect themselves.
The blades spin fast, like a fan.
A big offshore rotor turns only about ten times a minute. But because the blades are so long, their tips move at more than 300 kilometers an hour.
A good turbine could catch all the energy in the wind.
