Every outlet is connected to a spinning magnet. Turn the generator in 3D, watch the current swing back and forth, and see where Taiwan's power comes from.
Almost all the electricity in the wall comes from a magnet spinning past coils of wire in a power plant. Steam, gas, water, or wind only does one job: it keeps the magnet turning.

A diagram, not to scale. Real power plant generators use electromagnets and three sets of coils, weigh hundreds of tons, and in Taiwan spin 60 times a second (3,600 turns a minute for a two-pole generator). Here the speed is slowed down so you can see each turn. The power lines, substations, and transformers between the plant and your home are left out; see the reading.

Plug in a phone charger, and electricity is there instantly, day and night. A battery runs out, but the outlet in the wall never seems to. Where does that electricity come from? Follow the wires behind the wall, and they lead to a power line, then to a substation, and finally to a power plant that may be far away. And inside almost every power plant, you will find the same simple thing: a magnet that spins.
In 1831, the English scientist Michael Faraday discovered something amazing. When he moved a magnet near a coil of wire, electricity flowed in the wire. When the magnet stopped, the electricity stopped too. A magnet sitting still does nothing; it is the change, the movement, that pushes the electrons. This is called electromagnetic induction, and almost every power plant in the world depends on it.
A generator is a faster, bigger version of Faraday's experiment. A magnet spins next to coils of wire. As the north pole sweeps past a coil, it pushes the electrons one way. Half a turn later, the south pole sweeps past and pushes them the other way. So the current keeps changing direction. This is called alternating current, or AC. In Taiwan, the current makes 60 complete back-and-forth cycles every second, which is why we say the power is 60 hertz.
So what turns the magnet? In most power plants, it is a turbine, a wheel with blades, pushed by something moving fast. Coal and nuclear plants boil water into high-pressure steam that blasts through the turbine. Gas plants burn natural gas in a turbine like a jet engine, and many also use the leftover heat to make steam. At a dam, falling water turns the turbine, and on a wind farm, the wind does. Only one common source works differently: solar panels turn sunlight into electricity with no moving parts at all.
From the generator, electricity travels across the island on tall towers. To travel far with little waste, it is raised to a very high voltage; Taipower's biggest lines carry 345,000 volts. Substations step it down again and again, until a transformer near your street lowers it to the 110 volts in your outlet. The electrons in your wall do not travel all the way from the power plant. They just wiggle back and forth in place while the energy rushes along the wires.
So where does Taiwan's electricity come from? In 2025, about 48% came from burning natural gas, 35% from coal, 13% from renewable sources such as solar and wind, and about 1% from nuclear power. Taiwan's last nuclear reactor shut down in May 2025. Every choice has a cost: coal and gas release carbon dioxide, and the sun and wind come and go with the weather. But apart from solar panels, all of them come back to the idea Faraday found almost two hundred years ago: spin a magnet, and the electrons move.

Six Ways to Make Power ·
Five of these six spin a generator. They differ only in what pushes the turbine, and in what that costs the air, the land, and the future.
Burns gas in a turbine like a jet engine. In a combined-cycle plant, the hot exhaust also boils water for a second, steam-driven turbine.
Burns coal to boil water, and the steam spins the turbine. For the same amount of electricity, coal releases more than twice as much carbon dioxide as natural gas.
Splitting uranium atoms heats water into steam. Taiwan's last reactor, Maanshan Unit 2, shut down in May 2025. An August 2025 vote on restarting it did not pass because too few people voted.
Falling water spins the turbine. At Sun Moon Lake, Taipower pumps water uphill in the daytime with solar power and lets it fall to make electricity at night, like a giant battery.
The wind pushes long blades that turn a generator at the top of the tower. Some of Asia's largest offshore wind farms stand in the sea off Changhua.
The one exception: solar panels turn light straight into electricity with no moving parts. How they do it is Lesson 3.
No generator to spin ·
Myth vs. Fact ·
The electricity in the wall is stored somewhere, like water in a tank.
Most of it is made at the very moment you use it. Power plants speed up and slow down all day to match what everyone is using right now.
A strong magnet next to a wire makes electricity.
Only a changing magnetic field makes electricity. The magnet has to move, or the coil has to move. A magnet sitting still makes none at all.
The electrons in your outlet traveled all the way from the power plant.
In alternating current, electrons just wiggle back and forth in place. What travels from the power plant is energy, carried along the wires very fast.
Taiwan's electricity is the same everywhere in the world.
Taiwan uses 110 volts at 60 hertz, like the United States. Most of Europe and mainland China use about 220 to 230 volts at 50 hertz, so travelers need the right adapter.
A magnet only makes electricity while it is moving. Spin it, and the electrons move; stop it, and they stop.
The poles take turns passing the coil, so the current keeps switching direction. That is AC.
Steam, gas, water, and wind are just different hands turning the crank. Only solar has no crank at all.
Electricity travels at hundreds of thousands of volts to waste less, then steps down to 110 volts for your home.

Strong magnets can pinch fingers, so an adult should handle them. Keep magnets away from phones, bank cards, and anyone with a pacemaker, and never let small children put magnets in their mouths. The reading is tiny, only thousandths of a volt, which is why power plants spin magnets so fast in huge coils.
