The waves at the beach come and go all day and do no harm. A tsunami is something else. Out at sea it is so low that a ship may not notice it, yet it crosses the ocean as fast as a jet. In a 3D cutaway of the sea, compare the two kinds of waves, and follow a tsunami from deep water to the shore as it slows down and rises. Then learn the signs that tell you to move to high ground at once.
An ordinary wave is made by the wind, and it moves only the water near the surface. A tsunami usually begins when the seabed suddenly jumps up or drops down in a great earthquake. That pushes the whole depth of water, from the bottom to the top. In deep water a tsunami is very fast and very low. Near the shore the water is shallow, so the front slows down, the water behind catches up, and the sea piles up high.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. You are looking at the sea from the side, with deep ocean on the left and a town on the right. The dots are bits of water, and they turn yellow when they move. First choose Wind waves and see which dots move. Then choose Tsunami and compare. Follow the tsunami toward the shore and watch its speed and its height.

A teaching model. The speeds are real: they come from the rule used by the Central Weather Administration, in which the speed depends only on the depth of the water. The shape of the seabed is an example, and so is the number that shows how much taller the wave becomes. On a real coast that depends strongly on the shape of the shore. The picture is squeezed: the real ocean is far wider and far flatter, and a real tsunami in deep water is hundreds of kilometers long and less than a meter high.

Reading ·
Stand on a beach and watch the waves. Each one rises, curls over, breaks, and slides back. A minute later you have seen ten of them. These waves are made by the wind blowing across the sea. They look strong, but they move only the water near the top. A diver a little way down hardly feels them.
A tsunami is not made by the wind. Most tsunamis begin with a great earthquake under the sea. If the seabed suddenly jumps up or drops down, it lifts or lowers all the water above it, from the bottom of the sea to the top. That huge push spreads outward in every direction. A landslide under the sea or a volcano erupting in the sea can do the same thing.
Out in the deep ocean, a tsunami is hard to notice. It may be less than a meter high, and the distance from one crest to the next can be hundreds of kilometers, so a ship simply rises and falls a little. But it is moving very fast. Its speed depends on the depth of the water. In the open ocean it travels 500 to 1,000 kilometers an hour, about as fast as a jet plane.
Everything changes near the land. The water becomes shallow, so the front of the tsunami slows down. The water behind it is still in deeper water and still moving fast. It catches up and piles on top. The tsunami grows from something a ship cannot feel into a wall of water.
When it reaches the shore, a tsunami does not behave like a beach wave. It does not break and slide back in a few seconds. The whole sea keeps pouring onto the land for minutes, and it carries boats, cars, and pieces of buildings with it. Then it drains back out, just as strongly. There is usually more than one wave.
Sometimes the sea gives a warning. Before a tsunami arrives, the water may suddenly pull far back from the shore and leave the seabed bare. This does not always happen. So the rule is simple. If you are near the sea and you feel a strong earthquake, or you see the water draw back, or you hear a tsunami warning, do not wait and do not watch. Go to high ground at once.

Work It Out · 算算看
The speed of a tsunami depends on only one thing: how deep the water is. Choose a depth and see. Then make the water shallower, as it is near a coast.
The speed is the square root of the depth times the pull of gravity (9.8), the rule given by the Central Weather Administration. A slower tsunami is not a safer one. As it slows down, it grows taller, and even near the shore it is far faster than a person can run.

Four things worth knowing if you live on an island.
Word · 字源
The word tsunami is Japanese, and it means harbor wave. People once called tsunamis tidal waves, but that name is misleading. Tides are caused by the pull of the moon and the sun. A tsunami has nothing to do with them.
1867
On December 18, 1867, a strong earthquake shook northern Taiwan. Records say that the water in Keelung harbor flowed out to sea until the bottom of the harbor lay bare. A moment later, great waves rolled in and carried boats into the town. Of the possible tsunamis in Taiwan's old records, this is the one that scientists are most sure was caused by an earthquake near the island.
1781
An old record from southern Taiwan, near today's Jiadong in Pingtung, describes a clear day in 1781. Suddenly the sea roared like thunder and rose over the village. People climbed up the bamboo to escape. Soon the water drained away, and the fields and ditches were full of fish and shrimp. Nobody had felt an earthquake, so the tsunami may have come from far away.
Science · 科學
An earthquake under the sea does not always cause a tsunami. The seabed has to move up or down, so that it lifts or drops the water above it. If the two sides only slide past each other sideways, a large tsunami is very unlikely. The shape of the coast matters too. In a bay shaped like a funnel, the water is squeezed together and rises much higher.

A tsunami is just a very big beach wave.
A beach wave moves only the top of the sea and is gone in seconds. A tsunami moves the whole depth of water and keeps pouring in for minutes.
You can see a tsunami coming from far out at sea.
In deep water it is less than a meter high. It becomes tall only when it reaches shallow water near the shore.
The sea always pulls back before a tsunami.
Sometimes it does, and then you must leave at once. But not every tsunami gives this warning, so do not wait for it.
