Hold up your thumb and blink: it jumps. Earth plays the same trick with its orbit to measure the stars. Then find out when tonight's starlight set out, from the year you were born back to the Ming dynasty.
Stars are so far away that we measure them in light-years. As Earth goes around the Sun, a nearby star shifts back and forth a tiny bit against the faraway stars behind it. This shift is called parallax, and the farther away the star, the smaller the shift.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Earth today (blue) and Earth half a year later (orange) look at the same nearby star. Their sight lines land on the faraway stars at two different spots: that shift is parallax. Pick a star and watch the two lines squeeze together as the star gets farther away. On the right, a telescope view shows the tiny loop each star traces in a year, all at the same zoom. Then switch to 20, 100, and 2,000 light-years to see where the Sun's real neighbors are.
Drag to turn · 拖曳旋轉 Scroll or pinch to zoom · 滾輪/雙指縮放
This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The telescope view, the star cards, and tonight's list still work.
In the parallax view, Earth's orbit is true size and every star's distance is shrunk by the same 67,000 times, so nearer stars still show bigger shifts. In the neighbors views, one unit is one light-year and every position is real. The telescope view uses each star's real parallax.

Reading ·
Look up on a clear night, and all the stars seem to sit on the same dark dome, as if they were the same distance away. They are not. Some stars are close neighbors of the Sun, and others are hundreds of times farther. The distances are so huge that kilometers are no help, so astronomers use the light-year: the distance light travels in one year, about 9.46 trillion kilometers. A light-year is a distance, not a time. Proxima Centauri, the nearest star after the Sun, is about 4.2 light-years away.
How can you measure the distance to something you can never visit? Try this. Hold up your thumb at arm's length and look at it with one eye. Then blink and look with the other eye. Your thumb seems to jump against the background. This jump is called parallax. Bring your thumb closer to your face, and it jumps more; move it farther away, and it jumps less. Your brain uses the small difference between your two eyes to judge how far away things are.
Astronomers use the same trick, but with two eyes much farther apart. Every six months, Earth reaches the opposite side of its orbit, about 300 million kilometers from where it was. Seen from these two places, a nearby star shifts a tiny bit against much more distant stars in the background. Measure the angle of that shift, draw a triangle, and you can work out the distance. The angle is tiny: even for Proxima Centauri, it is like the width of a coin seen from more than five kilometers away. Farther stars shift even less.
For more than 2,000 years, people looked for this shift and could not find it. Some ancient Greek thinkers even took this as proof that Earth does not move. The shift was simply too small for their eyes. At last, in 1838, the German astronomer Friedrich Bessel measured the parallax of a faint star called 61 Cygni and found it was about 10 light-years away. Today we know it is 11.4. In 1989, the European satellite Hipparcos began making precise measurements from above the blurry air, for about 118,000 stars, and its successor, Gaia, has measured nearly 1.5 billion.
Because light needs time to travel, looking at the stars means looking into the past. The light from Sirius that reaches you tonight left it about eight and a half years ago. Vega's light left 25 years ago, and Betelgeuse's light began its journey around 500 years ago, during China's Ming dynasty. The poet Li Bai wrote that people today cannot see the Moon of ancient times, yet this same Moon once shone on the ancients. Starlight turns his idea around: tonight you can see light that set out while people of the past were alive.
Parallax is the first step on a ladder of distances. It works well for nearby stars, but for very distant ones the shift is too small to measure well, so astronomers use other clues, such as how bright a star really is. Even some famous bright stars, like Deneb, still have uncertain distances. Use the list below to find out when tonight's starlight left home, and look for your own birthday star: a star whose light set out in the year you were born.

Myth vs. Fact ·
A light-year is a measure of time.
A light-year is a distance: how far light travels in one year, about 9.46 trillion kilometers. It uses time to describe length, just like saying a store is "ten minutes away."
All the stars are the same distance away, stuck on a dome.
They only look that way because they are too far away for our eyes to judge depth. In Orion alone, Bellatrix is about 250 light-years away, Betelgeuse about 500, and Rigel about 860.
The brightest stars are the closest ones.
Within 20 light-years, Hipparcos measured 74 stars, and only 17 of them can be seen without a telescope. Most of the Sun's neighbors, including Proxima Centauri, are dim red dwarfs. Deneb shines brightly even though it is more than 1,000 light-years away, because it gives off tens of thousands of times more light than the Sun.20 光年內,依巴谷衛星量到 74 顆星,肉眼看得到的只有 17 顆。
Many of the stars we see have already burned out.
Starlight is old, but not that old. Almost every star you can see without a telescope is within a few thousand light-years, and stars shine for millions or billions of years. Their light left them only recently, as stars go, so nearly all of them are still shining.
Blink one eye, then the other: near things jump more than far things. That jump is parallax.
Not a time. One light-year is about 9.5 trillion kilometers, or 63,000 times the distance from Earth to the Sun.
