Shrink the Sun to a basketball and Earth becomes a sesame seed 26 meters away. Fly out to Neptune on true distances, and race a flash of sunlight across the solar system.
The planets are tiny compared with the distances between them, so the solar system is almost entirely empty space. No picture can show both the sizes and the distances to scale.
3D Model · 3D 模型
The orbits and the planets' positions are real and to scale for today. Drag the size slider down to True size: the planets shrink until even Jupiter disappears, and only the colored dots show where they are. Then press Play to send a flash of light from the Sun and watch how long it takes to reach each planet. Zoom out step by step, from the inner planets to Neptune.
Drag to turn · 拖曳旋轉 Scroll or pinch to zoom · 滾輪/雙指縮放
This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The distance table and the scale-model calculator below still work.
Distances are always to scale. Sizes are true at the left end of the slider and enlarged up to 1,000 times at the right end; the Sun is never enlarged more than 20 times, or it would swallow Mercury's orbit. Positions are today's, from real orbital elements.

Most pictures of the solar system show the planets lined up close together, like beads on a string. Those pictures are useful, but they cannot be true to scale. To see why, shrink the Sun to the size of a basketball. Earth becomes a sesame seed, about 26 meters away, and the Moon is a grain of sand less than seven centimeters from it. Mercury, Venus, and Mars are even smaller seeds, scattered within 40 meters of the ball.
Keep walking. Jupiter, the giant, is only a grape, 134 meters from the basketball. Saturn is a slightly smaller grape at 246 meters. Uranus and Neptune are peas, 495 and 776 meters out, almost two laps around a running track. On that scale, the nearest star after the Sun would be about 6,900 kilometers away, almost as far as Sydney is from Taiwan. Between all these tiny objects there is almost nothing at all. The solar system is mostly empty space.
How do we know such huge distances? Astronomers use a unit called the astronomical unit, or AU: the average distance from Earth to the Sun, about 150 million kilometers. Measuring it took centuries. In 1672, astronomers in Paris and in French Guiana measured the position of Mars at the same time, and the small difference between their views gave the first good estimate. In 1769, Captain Cook sailed to Tahiti to time Venus crossing the face of the Sun for the same purpose. Today, radar and spacecraft measure these distances to within a few meters.
Even light needs time to cross the solar system. Light moves 300,000 kilometers every second, yet sunlight takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach Earth, so the Sun you see is the Sun of eight minutes ago. Sunlight reaches Jupiter in about 43 minutes and Neptune in about four hours. Radio messages to rovers on Mars take between 3 and 22 minutes, depending on where the two planets are. Voyager 1, launched in 1977, is now so far away that on November 18, 2026, its signals will take a full day to reach us.
People have always wondered how big the world is. The Chinese word for universe, yuzhou, joins two ideas: yu, all of space in every direction, and zhou, all of time from the past to the future. The astronomer Zhang Heng, almost 1,900 years ago, pictured the sky as an egg with Earth as the yolk inside. Telescopes later added two planets no one had seen before: Uranus in 1781 and Neptune in 1846. Neptune was first found with mathematics, from the way it tugged on Uranus, and only then spotted in the sky.
Beyond Neptune lie Pluto and many other icy worlds, and far beyond them, a vast cloud of comets that may reach a quarter of the way to the nearest star. The planets you found in Lesson 7 are tiny bright dots scattered across this enormous emptiness. Try the calculator below, build your own model at school, and walk the solar system for yourself.
