How Does a Fish Breathe Under Water?

A fish needs oxygen just as you do, and there is oxygen in water, but only a little. In a 3D model, look inside a gill, where water and blood slide past each other on two sides of a very thin wall. Watch the oxygen cross over. Then turn the blood around so that it flows the same way as the water, and see how much the fish would lose. Last, meet four fish that breathe in four different ways.

Big idea ·

Water holds oxygen, but far less than air does. A fish keeps water flowing over its gills, which are packed with thin plates full of blood. Oxygen moves from the water into the blood through a very thin wall. The clever part is the direction. The blood flows the opposite way to the water, so all along the gill the water still has a little more oxygen than the blood beside it. That lets a fish take most of the oxygen out of the water.

A teaching model. The numbers are examples, with the oxygen in the incoming water counted as 100. Real gills have thousands of thin plates, and the model shows one short strip of one of them. A real gill can take more than 80 percent of the oxygen from the water passing through it. Oxygen is a gas dissolved in the water, and it cannot be seen. The fish is drawn as a simple shape.

Unit 10: How Does a Fish Breathe Under Water?

Watch a fish in a tank. Its mouth opens and closes all day long, as if it were drinking. What it is really doing is breathing. Each gulp sends water across its gills and out through a slit behind its head.

Fish need oxygen for the same reason that you do. Their cells use it to get energy from food. There is oxygen dissolved in water, but not much. A liter of fresh water holds only about 8 cubic centimeters of oxygen, and a liter of air holds about 210. Water is also much heavier and thicker than air, so it is hard work to move.

Gills are built to make the most of that little bit. Under the gill cover there are rows of soft red threads. Each thread carries many thin plates, and each plate is full of tiny blood vessels. Together they give the water a very large surface to touch, and the wall between the water and the blood is extremely thin.

Oxygen always moves from where there is more of it to where there is less. So when water rich in oxygen passes blood that is poor in oxygen, the oxygen crosses the wall into the blood.

Here is the clever part. In a gill, the blood flows in the opposite direction to the water. Fresh water first meets blood that is nearly full, and gives it a little more. As the water moves on, it meets blood that is emptier and emptier. All the way along, the water has slightly more oxygen than the blood beside it, so the oxygen never stops crossing.

This is why a fish dies in air, even though air has much more oxygen. Out of the water, the soft plates of the gills collapse and stick together, and almost no surface is left for the oxygen to cross.

Questions ·

Why does a fish keep opening and closing its mouth?

It is breathing. Each gulp sends water across its gills.

Which way does the blood in a gill flow, compared with the water?

In the opposite direction.

Why does a fish die in air?

Out of the water, the thin plates of its gills collapse and stick together, so there is almost no surface for oxygen to cross.

Engineering · 工程

A trick used twice

Two streams flowing in opposite directions can pass almost everything from one to the other. Gills use this for oxygen. Birds that stand in cold water use it for heat. Warm blood going down the leg runs beside cold blood coming back up and warms it, so the heat stays in the body and is not lost through the feet.

Sharks ·

Swim, or stop breathing

A goldfish can rest on the bottom and still breathe, because it pumps water over its gills with its mouth and gill covers. Most sharks do it another way. They swim forward with the mouth a little open and let the water rush through. Some kinds have no other method, and would probably suffocate if they could not keep moving.

Africa · 非洲

A fish that waits in the mud

Lungfish have lungs as well as gills, and African lungfish must come up for air or they suffocate. That sounds like a weakness in a fish. But when the dry season comes and the pond turns to cracked mud, the lungfish burrows in and waits, breathing air, until the rain returns.

Taiwan · 台灣

The flower jumpers of the mudflats

On the mudflats of Taiwan's west coast, small fish with eyes on top of their heads skip across the mud at low tide. People call them flower jumpers. They are mudskippers. Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture explains that their skin and gill chambers let them breathe in air as well as in water. A mudskipper first fills its gill chambers with water to keep its throat wet, and then it breathes air through the lining of its mouth and throat.

  3. Same way: the trains travel together, so each cup stays beside the same partner. Apply the rule, and count the beads in the blood train.
  4. Opposite ways: start again. This time slide the trains past each other, one cup at a time, from end to end. Apply the rule at every step, and count again.

Traveling together, the blood train ends with 25 of the 50 beads and can never get more. Passing in opposite directions, it ends with more than half. That is the whole secret of a gill.
