Your phone talks to a tower using invisible radio waves. Walk a hiker over a 3D mountain, watch the signal bars drop behind the ridge, then add a tower and switch to 5G.
A phone turns your voice and data into invisible radio waves and sends them only as far as the nearest base station. The base station passes them into the cable network, so the wireless part is just the last short hop, and a mountain in the way can block it.

Drag to turn the model, and scroll or pinch to zoom. Slide to walk the hiker from town over the ridge into the valley, and watch the signal bars and the line to the tower. Switch between low band and high band, add a base station in the valley, and turn the coverage map on or off.

A diagram: about 1 unit is 1 kilometer across, but the mountain and towers are drawn much taller than real. Signal strength is a teaching model, not measurements from any phone company: it weakens with distance like signals over real ground, and a mountain in the way removes more for high frequencies than for low ones. Phones turn signal strength into bars in different ways.

You are hiking in Taiwan's mountains with your family. In the parking lot, your phone shows full bars. An hour up the trail, behind a ridge, the bars drop to one, and then to none. The phone has not changed, and neither has the network. What changed is the mountain between you and a tower you cannot see. How does a phone talk through thin air, and why can a mountain stop it?
In 1901, the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi sent a radio signal across the Atlantic Ocean, about 3,400 kilometers from England to Canada. The whole message was the letter S in Morse code. In 1973, Martin Cooper of Motorola made the first call from a handheld mobile phone, standing on a street in New York. His phone weighed more than a kilogram. Today's phones are far lighter, but they still use the same invisible waves.
A phone works by sending and receiving radio waves. Radio waves are a kind of light that our eyes cannot see, and they travel at the speed of light, about 300,000 kilometers every second. Your phone turns your voice into a pattern of tiny changes in a radio wave, and its antenna sends the wave out in all directions. A tower three kilometers away receives it in about ten millionths of a second.
The waves do not travel all the way to your friend. They only go as far as the nearest base station, a tower with antennas on a hill, a rooftop, or a pole. The base station connects to the cable network from Lesson 5, which carries the call the rest of the way. Each base station covers an area called a cell, which is why Americans say cell phone. As you move, your phone switches from one base station to the next without dropping the call. This switch is called a handoff.
Radio waves grow weaker as they spread out, and they lose even more strength when something solid is in the way. They can bend a little around a hilltop, but a big mountain blocks most of the signal. That is why hikers often have signal on a summit but none in the valley behind it. Lower-frequency waves travel farther and get around obstacles better. Higher-frequency waves, like the 3.5 gigahertz used for 5G, carry more data but do not reach as far, so 5G needs more base stations.
Taiwan's first 5G service began on June 30, 2020. By the end of 2025, Taiwan had more than 120,000 licensed base stations, and for the first time more of them were for 5G than for 4G. Still, nobody can put a tower behind every mountain. In an emergency, dial 112. If any phone company's base station can hear your phone, the call goes through, even without a SIM card. On long hikes, carry another way to call for help too, such as a satellite messenger.

Try It in the Model ·
This is why phone companies build towers on hilltops, and why trails and tunnels often have dead spots.
Close to the tower with nothing in the way: full bars, and the waves arrive in a few millionths of a second.
The waves bend a little over the ridge, but not enough. The phone shows no service.
With a base station in the valley, the phone hands off to it and gets full bars again.
Higher frequency carries more data but fades faster with distance, so the green area shrinks.

Myth vs. Fact ·
More bars means the tower is closer.
Bars show how strong the signal is. A far tower with a clear view can beat a near tower behind a hill.
Phones talk directly to each other.
Each phone talks only to its nearest base station. The network of cables and towers carries the call in between.
✗ Myth · 迷思5G waves travel faster than 4G waves.5G 的電波跑得比 4G 快。
✓ Fact · 事實All radio waves travel at the speed of light. 5G is faster because it carries more data at once, not because its waves move faster.
Phone signals have been shown to cause brain cancer.
A 2024 review for the World Health Organization looked at 63 studies and found no link between mobile phone use and brain cancer.
