Red Betelgeuse and blue-white Rigel sit in the same constellation. Heat a star from 2,000 to 30,000 degrees and watch its color change, then sort 580 real stars by color into the famous H-R diagram.
A star's color tells us how hot its surface is. Cooler stars glow orange-red, hotter stars glow white and blue-white, and our Sun sits in the middle.

Drag the temperature slider and watch the star change from orange-red to white to blue-white, with the Sun beside it for comparison. On the right, see its light color by color: hotter stars shine brightest at shorter, bluer wavelengths. Then switch to Sort the Stars: about 580 real stars measured by Hipparcos start out in the sky around the Sun. Press the sort button, and they fly into place by color and true brightness.

This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The spectrum, the star cards, and tonight's list still work.
Colors are calculated from the physics of glowing objects (Planck's law) and turned into screen colors. In the sorted view, each star's color comes from its measured color index, and its height from its true brightness, using the Hipparcos distance. Before sorting, distances are squeezed so that faraway stars fit on the screen.

Look at Orion on a winter evening. Betelgeuse, on his shoulder, glows orange-red, while Rigel, at his foot, shines blue-white. Look carefully at other bright stars, and you will find that stars are not all white. They come in a whole range of colors: orange-red, orange, yellowish white, white, and blue-white. What makes the difference?
The answer is temperature. Anything hot enough gives off light, and its color depends on how hot it is. A piece of iron in a blacksmith's fire first glows dull red, then orange, then yellow, and finally white. A star's surface works the same way. Orange-red stars like Betelgeuse are the coolest, at about 3,300 degrees Celsius. Our Sun is about 5,500 degrees, and blue-white stars like Rigel are 12,000 degrees or more. This is the opposite of a bathroom faucet, where red means hot and blue means cold!
A star does not give off just one color. It gives off a whole rainbow of light mixed together, plus light our eyes cannot see. A hotter star gives off more blue light, and a cooler star gives off more red. The Sun's light is strongest in the green part of the rainbow, but it mixes in so much of every other color that the Sun is really white. It only looks yellow or orange when it is low in the sky, because the air scatters away some of its blue light.
About a hundred years ago, astronomers began sorting stars by their light. At Harvard, Annie Jump Cannon sorted hundreds of thousands of stars into classes named O, B, A, F, G, K, and M, from hottest to coolest. Then Ejnar Hertzsprung and Henry Norris Russell compared each star's color with how bright it really is. Most stars fell along one band, now called the main sequence. A few were giants, far brighter than their color suggests because they are enormous, and a few were tiny, faint white dwarfs.
Chinese astronomers paid attention to star colors, too. More than 2,000 years ago, the historian Sima Qian used stars as color samples: white like Sirius, red like Antares, and yellow like Betelgeuse. Yellow? Today Betelgeuse is clearly orange-red. In 2022, a team of astronomers suggested that the ancient records are right and that Betelgeuse has slowly changed color as it aged into a red supergiant. Antares, the red heart of the Scorpion, was known in China as the Great Fire.
You can see star colors for yourself, but they are soft, because our eyes see color poorly in the dark. The trick is to compare: look from Betelgeuse to Rigel, or from Arcturus to Vega. A pair of binoculars, slightly out of focus, makes the colors easier to see. Use the list below to find tonight's bright stars over Changhua, sorted from the coolest to the hottest.

Sima Qian
White like Sirius, red like Antares, yellow like Betelgeuse, blue like Bellatrix, black like the great star of Kui." (Sima Qian, Records of the Grand Historian)
Sima Qian used bright stars to describe the colors of the planets. His yellow Betelgeuse helped astronomers in 2022 argue that the star has turned red in the last 2,000 years.
The Great Fire
In the seventh month, the Fire flows west; in the ninth month, we hand out winter clothes." (Book of Songs)
The Fire is Antares, red as a flame. "The Fire flows" means it sinks lower in the west each evening as autumn comes, so the line is about cooling weather, not a heat wave.
Antares
The name Antares comes from Greek for "rival of Ares," the god the Romans called Mars, because its red color matches the red planet. Every two years or so, Mars passes near Antares, and the two red lights can be compared side by side.
Antares(心宿二)的名字來自希臘文「Ares(羅馬人稱 Mars,火星)的對手」,因為它和紅色的火星一樣紅。
OBAFGKM
In the early 1900s, Annie Jump Cannon and her team at Harvard sorted the light of hundreds of thousands of stars by hand. Her order, O B A F G K M, is still used today. Students remember it with "Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me" or "Oh Be A Fine Guy, Kiss Me."
她排出的順序 O B A F G K M 沿用至今,英文口訣是「Oh Be A Fine Girl(或 Guy), Kiss Me」。
Myth vs. Fact ·
Red means hot and blue means cold, like a faucet.
For glowing objects, it is the other way around. Red stars are the coolest, and blue-white stars are the hottest.
The Sun is a yellow star.
Seen from space, the Sun is white. It looks yellow or orange only through our air, especially when it is low in the sky.
✗ Myth · 迷思Some stars are green.
A star whose light peaks in green, like the Sun, also gives off plenty of every other color, and the mix looks white. There are no green stars.
A star flashing red and blue near the horizon is changing color.
Our moving air bends each color of starlight a little differently. Near the horizon, a bright star like Sirius twinkles in flashes of color, but the star itself stays the same.
