Why Isn't There an Eclipse Every Month?
Solar and lunar eclipses, the Moon's tilted orbit, and eclipse seasons, with a 3D model that runs on real dates.
Big idea ·
An eclipse needs the Sun, Earth, and the Moon in a nearly perfect line. The Moon's orbit is tilted, so that happens only twice a year, during eclipse seasons.
3D Model · 3D 模型
Real Dates, Real Eclipses
This model puts the Sun, Earth, and Moon where they really are on any date. Press Play or drag the timeline: at most new and full moons, the shadows miss. The dots on the timeline are real eclipses. Tap one to jump there, or switch to Whole year to see why eclipses come in seasons.
Drag to turn · 拖曳旋轉 Scroll or pinch to zoom · 滾輪/雙指縮放
This 3D model needs WebGL, which this browser does not support. The cards and the eclipse list below still work.
Gold diamonds: the two nodes, where the Moon's orbit crosses Earth's orbit plane
Dark cones: the shadows of Earth and the Moon, always pointing away from the Sun
Gold bands on the timeline: eclipse seasons
In the 3D view, the tilt of the Moon's orbit (really 5.1°) and the sizes of the Sun, Earth, and Moon as seen from each other are all drawn about five times larger, so the shadows look wider and linger about five times longer there. Whether an eclipse happens does not change. The two small views show the real Sun and Moon, and every dot on the timeline is a real eclipse.

Unit 2: Why Isn't There an Eclipse Every Month?
In ancient China, people said that a heavenly dog was eating the Sun. When daylight suddenly faded in the middle of the day, crowds beat drums and banged pots to scare the dog away, and it always seemed to work, because the Sun always came back. Chinese court astronomers took eclipses so seriously that they kept records of them for more than two thousand years. Today we know that no dog is involved. An eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon line up almost perfectly, so that one of them moves into another's shadow.
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth and its shadow falls on Earth. This can only happen at new moon, when the Moon is on the Sun's side of Earth. By a lucky coincidence, the Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon but also about 400 times farther away, so the two look almost exactly the same size in our sky. When the Moon covers the Sun completely, day turns to twilight for a few minutes, and the Sun's glowing outer atmosphere, the corona, appears around the black Moon. The darkest part of the Moon's shadow is never more than about 270 kilometers wide, though, so only people inside that narrow path see a total eclipse. People for thousands of kilometers around it see a partial eclipse, with a bite taken out of the Sun.
The Moon's orbit is not a perfect circle. If a solar eclipse happens while the Moon is farther from Earth than usual, the Moon looks slightly smaller than the Sun and cannot cover it completely, so a bright ring of sunlight is left around the dark Moon. This is an annular eclipse, from the Latin word for a ring. On June 21, 2020, the path of one crossed Taiwan, and people in Chiayi and Tainan saw a thin "ring of fire." Whatever kind of solar eclipse it is, never look straight at the Sun, not even when most of it is covered. Use certified eclipse glasses, or make a simple pinhole viewer and watch the Sun's image on a sheet of paper.
A lunar eclipse happens when Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon and the Moon moves into Earth's shadow. This can only happen at full moon. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is visible to everyone on the night side of Earth at the same time, and it is perfectly safe to watch with your bare eyes. During a total lunar eclipse the Moon does not disappear. It turns a dark copper red, because Earth's atmosphere bends a little sunlight into the shadow and filters out most of the blue light, just as it does at sunset. In a sense, the red Moon is lit by all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets at once.
If the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun every month, why isn't there a solar eclipse every month? The answer is that the Moon's orbit is tilted by about five degrees compared with Earth's path around the Sun. Most months, the new moon passes a little above or below the Sun, and its shadow misses Earth; two weeks later, the full moon passes above or below Earth's shadow. The two paths cross at only two points, called nodes, and an eclipse can happen only when a new or full moon falls close to one of them. That happens during a window of about five weeks, roughly every six months, called an eclipse season. The Sun's path across our sky is even named the ecliptic, because eclipses can happen only when the Moon is near it.
Every year has at least two solar eclipses somewhere on Earth, and lunar eclipses are about as common. Yet most people see many more lunar eclipses than solar ones. A lunar eclipse can be seen from half the planet, while a total solar eclipse touches only a thin strip, so any one place waits, on average, about 375 years between total solar eclipses. That is why people travel across the world to stand in the Moon's shadow, even for two or three minutes.
Why can a solar eclipse happen only at new moon, and a lunar eclipse only at full moon?
A solar eclipse needs the Moon between the Sun and Earth, which is where the Moon is at new moon. A lunar eclipse needs Earth between the Sun and the Moon, which is where the Moon is at full moon.
Why does the Moon turn red during a total lunar eclipse instead of disappearing?
Earth's atmosphere bends some sunlight into the shadow and filters out most of the blue light, so reddish light, like the light of sunrise and sunset, still reaches the Moon.
Why isn't there an eclipse every month?
The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees, so most new and full moons pass above or below the Sun or Earth's shadow. An eclipse happens only when a new or full moon falls near a node, during an eclipse season about every six months.

Myth vs. Fact ·
Four things people get wrong
There is an eclipse every month.
The Moon's orbit is tilted, so most new and full moons miss. Eclipses cluster in two eclipse seasons a year. Press Play in the model and watch the shadows pass above and below.
Everyone on the day side of Earth sees a solar eclipse.
Only places inside the Moon's shadow see it. A thin path sees it total, a wide region around it sees it partial, and the rest of the day side sees nothing at all.
Food cooked during an eclipse is poisonous, and pregnant women should hide.
Nothing about sunlight changes during an eclipse, and no special rays harm food or babies. The only real danger is looking straight at the Sun and hurting your eyes.
Very dark sunglasses are good enough for watching a solar eclipse.
Even dark sunglasses let through thousands of times too much light. Use eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, or a pinhole viewer.
Keep eclipses straight
Solar at new, lunar at full
A solar eclipse can only happen at new moon, and a lunar eclipse only at full moon. The Chinese calendar starts every month at the new moon, so a solar eclipse falls on the first day of a lunar month (or the day next to it, if it happens right around midnight), and a lunar eclipse falls around the fifteenth.
Name the one in the middle
Moon in the middle: the Moon's shadow falls on Earth, and that is a solar eclipse. Earth in the middle: Earth's shadow falls on the Moon, and that is a lunar eclipse.
Eclipses come in pairs
An eclipse season lasts about five weeks, so a solar eclipse is often followed or preceded by a lunar eclipse two weeks apart. Look for pairs of dots on the timeline.
Safe or not?
A lunar eclipse is always safe, and you need no equipment. Never look straight at a solar eclipse without certified eclipse glasses. Ordinary sunglasses, however dark, are not enough.
Classroom Activity 1 ·
Eclipses with a Lamp and a Ball
You need ·
A lamp with the shade removed (the Sun)
A white foam ball stuck on a pencil (the Moon)
Your own head (Earth)
A room you can make dark
Steps · 步驟
Set up as in Lesson 1: the lamp is the Sun, the ball is the Moon, and your head is Earth.
Face the lamp and move the ball until it hides the bulb. Its shadow falls on your face: a solar eclipse. Close one eye; the eye in the darkest part of the shadow sees it total.
Turn around so the lamp is behind you, and move the ball into your head's shadow: a lunar eclipse.
Now raise your arm a little, as if the Moon's orbit were tilted, and go around again. The ball passes above the bulb and above your head's shadow: no eclipses this month.
For older students: keep your arm tilted toward the same wall of the room and walk slowly in a circle around the lamp. At two places in your walk, the ball lines up with the lamp again: those are the two eclipse seasons.
Teaching tip: step 5 is exactly what the Whole year view of the 3D model shows. Let students walk it first, then open the model.
Classroom Activity 2 ·
Make a Pinhole Viewer
You need ·
Two sheets of stiff white card
A piece of aluminum foil
Tape and a pin
Steps · 步驟
Cut a square hole about 3 centimeters wide in the middle of one card, and tape the foil over it.
Poke one small, clean hole in the foil with the pin.
Stand with your back to the Sun. Hold up the foil card so that sunlight passes through the pinhole onto the second card.
The small bright circle is an image of the Sun. Move the second card farther away to make it bigger. During a partial eclipse, you will see the bite.
Never look at the Sun through the pinhole. No card handy? During a partial eclipse, look at the ground under a leafy tree: the gaps between the leaves act as pinholes and paint hundreds of little crescent Suns.
